“Painters Demanding Increase in Wages,” The Ontarian (Belleville). August 14, 1919. Page 07. --- Kingston, Aug. 11 - The journeymen painters Friday served notice on the bosses demanding an increase of $1.20 a day over the present scale which according to the master painters is $4.00.

The painters’ demand is to go into effect on August 26th and the bosses seen would not make any statement as to what action they proposed taking.

Page 05. --- Garment Workers Modify Demands, But Employers Stand Pat. --- The garment workers have eliminated the two main clauses of their demands upon the employers, i.e., the abolition of the piece work system and that of the fixing of a minimum weekly wage. The chief remaining demand is that of a 25 per cent increase in wages. When The Star interviewed James G. Merrick, secretary of the Employers’ Association yesterday to enquire whether these terms would be acceptable to the employers, he stated: ‘They must absolutely come back on the terms under which they went out.’

‘Will the employers negotiate on the wage increases?’

‘Absolutely not.’
