Members of Congress are in line for their first pay raise since 2009 if they pass a massive stopgap spending measure that would avert a part
Typically you don’t get a pay raise if you can’t do your job effectively. I say they deserve the rope instead.
The pouring rain didn't stop members of the United Offices and Professional Workers, Congress of Industrial Organizations, from marching,, July 17, 1947. They were demonstrating at the Brooklyn Trust Company, on Montague Street in Brooklyn, on the first day of the country's first major bank strike. Employees were called out on strike by the CIO Financial Employees Guild to force the bank to reinstate three discharged union members and also to give a pay increase of 30%.

Gratitude Journal
I have been BRAVE this week.
First, I asked the publisher I freelance for for a pay increase (when I signed on they said "it pays x" and I just went with it). I've been working for them for 5 years now, have done 60 projects, and I've never missed a deadline, I've often returned stuff early, and I'm their pinch-hitter for rush and last-minute projects. (I even recently redid something another proofreader did poor job on.) They've referred to me as a lifesaver and a godsend, and I'm their best proofreader. Two contacts there have heavily implied that, and my brother-in-law, who works closely with them, has outright said so. So I asked for an increase on Tuesday. I haven't heard back yet, but they're not the fastest at responding, and maybe it'll take some discussion. But I'm glad I did it.
Also, I decided not to continue with choir. It was a hard decision because I love singing with a group, but it was stressing me out too much. I didn't join the choir to spend 50 straight minutes stressed almost to the point of tears. So anyway, I emailed the director and let him know, which was hard because I hate feeling like I've let people down, but really, it's the right choice and I'm not doing anything wrong or bad. (Haven't heard back from him, either, but...)
Anyway. I'm grateful to myself for making hard choices and taking brave actions.

The Office of Personnel Management directed federal agencies to hold off on issuing expected pay raises for a number of senior government officials, including Vice President Mike Pence and Cabinet members, in a memo Friday evening.
The fact remains:
On January 1, 2019, Trump issued an Executive Order freezing federal workers’ pay for 2019. Killing a 2.1% across-the-board pay raise. Happy New Year.
US Armed Forces members, Trump PROMISED YOU a 10% pay increase. HE LIED. You got 2.6%
Pence’s pay is scheduled to rise from $230,700 to $243,500.
Cabinet secretaries would be entitled to a jump in annual salary from $199,700 to $210,700.
Deputy secretaries would be entitled to a raise from $179,700 to $189,600.

"NEWSPRINT MEN ON STRIKE AT FORT FRANCES," Winnipeg Tribune. May 1, 1934. Page 3. --- Management Rejects Plea For 36-Hour Week and Guarantee of Employment ---- [Special to The Winnipeg Tribune] FORT FRANCES, Ont., May 1- Three thousand pulp and paper mill employes of this town are on strike today as a result of the dead-lock in negotiations between the pulp and paper companies and their mill employes. The strike became effective at 8 a.m., when no mill employes responded to the whistle summoning them to work.
There is no sign of disorders. The men are quietly walking the streets and the companies are making no attempt to operate with out- side help.
The companies have been negotiating with their employes for some time. The men are receiving 35 cents an hour basic wage for a 48-hour week on an annual contract which expired on April 30. The employes ask a substantial increase in pay, a 36-hour week, and an employment contract.
Officials of the company have not indicated what their counter- proposals are, other than to say that they have offered an increase in pay with an annual contract. They say that, with the newsprint market in the present uncertain shape, there must be leeway for employment readjustments to meet any situation which may develop. There is no objection, apparently to an annual contract, but the employers do not acquiesce in the plea for a long-time wage contract.
The two companies affected are the M. and O. Paper Company, International Falls, and the Fort Frances Pulp and Paper Company, of Fort Frances. R. Andrews has been conducting the negotiations for the management and union officials have conducted the case for the men.
