Dream Big
In the summer of 2016 I started working towards a dream that I developed while working on my undergraduate degrees. I have always loved learning in a classroom setting, alongside others, and through discussions with others that would stretch me. So in July 2016, I began a journey of working towards a PhD in Organizational Leadership through Indiana Wesleyan University. Through this experience, I have been challenged by others far beyond what I ever dreamed possible but as I prepare to finish my final course next week, I am humbled at the opportunity that I have had. (Now before you jump to celebrating and asking what I will do with all my free time, I am not finished with the program yet as I have to complete my comprehensive exam on May 10th and then write my dissertation which is currently taking shape). After those steps are completed I will be finished with my degree and realize a dream that I have held for past seventeen years.
During the course of the past three years I have been challenged through the learning of new material, engaging in discussions with my classmates, writing papers, and vigorous discussions with my professors. Although I have nearly completed the coursework, I can still vividly remember the first evening I spent on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University and calling Mindy because I felt unqualified and inadequate to be in the program. I actually told her that I felt as though they made a mistake by letting me into the program at all. While those insecurities still present themselves I have decided that they will not slow me down or prevent me from completing my dream. However, there have been a few other things along the way that have encouraged me to continue the program and permitted me to get to where I am today.
First, my dependence on God has grown through this program because of the obstacles that presented themselves. During my time in the program I was stretched and challenged to the point that I wanted to give up several times. However, through times of prayer and dependence on my Heavenly Father, I was able to push through. As this transpired I found myself not only being encouraged myself but desiring to be an encouragement to those in my cohort as well. God has sustained me throughout this program and allowed me to thrive even when I did not believe that I had the energy to continue. Second, has been the love and support of my family. Mindy and the kids have celebrated the accomplishments along the way, like finishing a class, especially statistics, or other important steps along the way. Their love and encouragement has provided laughter, a break from the stress, and the necessary support to be where I am today.
With these thoughts in mind, know that you can achieve your dreams through a strong dependence on God and with the support of your loved ones. Undoubtedly there will be challenges however those can be overcome as you accomplish your big dreams!
