So I just got back from a trip to Japan. (How I got to Japan is a long story, but the short version is that it involved an accident with a barbecue grill.) Anyway, while I was there I met a fellow slime who apparently managed to get a pretty nice job, so it's good to know there are job opportunities out there for slimes. His name is Myaku-Myaku, and he got a position as the mascot for the 2025 World Expo.

Okay, I don't think any of the official materials call him a slime; the official word is that he's made of water and cells; but I mean slimes are made of something, and you can't look at those drippy elbows and say he's not at least slime-adjacent.

Anyway, though, the World Expo just ended, so he's kind of out of work now, and I told him I'd put the word out in case anyone is looking for a highly experienced slime to hire preferably in some sort of public-relations capacity. He's a pretty good dancer, too, if that helps.

Environmental Impact Assessment for 2025 Japan World Exposition

The Draft Environmental Impact Assessment for the 2025 Japan World Exposition has been released and is accepting written comments until November 15. After reading the contents, I was dismayed by its shoddiness. The gist of my opinion is as follows.

As an international exposition, a long-term natural regeneration plan for Yumeshima and the Bay Area should be set forth. The goal should not be to reduce the impact on the environment, but to show in concrete terms how the expo's goal of "a future society where life shines" will deal with biodiversity. It should clearly state what will be done to increase the biodiversity of Yumeshima even more than it already is. In addition, it should

1. Impacts on plants, animals, and ecosystems should be quantitatively assessed

2. measures to avoid or reduce environmental impacts should be clearly stated.

3. Multiple proposals for avoiding and reducing environmental impacts should be presented and compared.

4. A consultative committee including the government, citizens and experts should be established to build consensus on mitigation of environmental impacts as the site plan progresses.

Satellite imagery of the sites of the last few world expositions shows how the organization of fairs differs over the years. In addition, the two categories of world expositions - ‘recognized, universal expositions’ that are generally larger than ‘specialized’ expositions also impact how the fairs are designed.  Expo 2010 is one of two ‘universal’ expositions in the list and was the largest world’s fair ever held at more than 1,300 acres. Milan’s Expo 2015, at 490 acres, gave each pavilion a tract of arable land as part of their pavilion space. Expo 2005, 2008, 2012, and 2017 are all considered specialized expositions, which is largely defined by a more specific theme and (with the exception of Expo 2005) are confined to under 62 acres. Expo 2012 and 2017 maxed out at 62 acres, while Expo 2008 Zaragoza was just 20! I tried to keep the satellite image dates as close as possible to when each fair would be open to the public. Starting with Expo 2000, satellite imagery of an open or nearly-complete expo becomes impossible as most images were taken long after the gates closed and the structures removed.

Elise did not know what to think concerning her current situation. Oh, sure, she had found a place that was both accessible to her need and finances. In the Low City. And the Low City was like... 80% slums, 20% building that could collapse the next day. Well, at least, the corner she was in was not the one that usually burned down. And, yes, the fact that the "poverty corner" of Eddony was literally cut of the other parts of the city-state by the biggest roadway ever? Not nice. Not nice at all. But at least, it was not the worse part of the district! I mean, the government would probably be to busy burning down the west neighborhood to come and burn her habitation down.

Talking about the government, that was a shitty one. No police officer in the poverty corner to protect them since... Well, knowing they would shot at anyone coming to close to them, it was probably for the best. Other way the messed the Low City up? Forbidding any firefighter to come in the zone. Oh, they had one firefighting force, don't get it wrong! It just that... Well, somebody out of Eddony convinces internationnal organisations to finance the fire station.

It was, at least, the story her neighbor Marcus, told her. And, sure, that story was true. If you did not count they were no proof that the government was behind the fires. That would not have surprised her, but Marcus and his colleagues had a conspiracy board in the firestation. Yes, Marcus was one of the firefighters of the Low City. And also a hero-worshipper, counting his biggest theory was "Dragon is mind controlled". Which, no, she probably just snapped like anyone trying to do something good here. The proof? The firefighters' conspiracy board.

Their was one other thing Marcus talked as much as the fires' or Dragon's theory: his goat, Marguerite. Which... How exactly did he get one? It was already hard enough to have her cat accepted and Felix's vaccination (including rabbies) were all in order!
