Strands of Place and Time
We are delighted to announce we have been awarded Arts Council England National Lottery Project Funding to develop our Strands of Place and Time project, in collaboration with Manchester School of Art, Action Factory, Super Slow Way and Padiham Townscape Heritage Initiative.
Strands of Place and Time will explore ideas of cultural heritage and migration by commissioning new work in response to world textiles in the collection from Alice Kettle, Jane McKeating, Nigel Hurlstone, Poppy Cartwright and Elnaz Yazdani, together with a community artwork created with local refugees and asylum seekers.
The artists began work on the project with research visits in December and January and their work will be exhibited in Gawthorpe Hall from 11 July to 3 November this year.
There will be lots of ways to get involved with the project, including coming along to textile workshops with content inspired by the collection and the exhibition in Padiham town centre and at Gawthorpe Hall from April to October. We’ll post more information about the workshops soon!
Alongside Strands of Place and Time, Alice Kettle’s monumental Thread Bearing Witness tapestries will be displayed in the Great Barn at Gawthorpe. Both exhibitions will be part of Super Slow Way’s politics of cloth themed 2019 British Textile Biennial in Pennine Lancashire from 3 October to 3 November.
