One of my favourite things about world trigger is how Ashihara avoids writing pitfalls. Despite being the protagonist, Osamu isn’t always right or perfect and the criticisms he receives from other characters are fair and needed.

Recent chapters (242-247) take a peek under Osamu’s hood and the narrative takes some time to analyze him.

245-247 especially show why Mikumo was able to lead his team to the top of B-rank in one season but 249 came with crucial realism -> he’s not the only strategist.

Even Mikumo’s specialized strength is not a silver bullet.

Ashihara takes it one step further though,

and brings the story right back to teamwork.

Border Uniforms

I've been wondering why the operators wear suits instead of their team's uniform and it just occurred to me that it's probably so that in a chaotic situation they can easily be distinguished from combatants because non-combatants don't carry a full trigger set.

The same probably goes for the awful white-and-orange C-Rank uniforms. You don't even need to look at their insignia to know that they're only carrying a training trigger so they shouldn't be directly involved in fighting.

it makes sense that Border never mentioned away missions to the public because what do you mean you've been going to the neighborhood and you're not rescuing people's relatives

obviously it could be spun like 'gaining intel for proper rescues' and probably what they've been doing anyway but the public won't take it like that and for good reason too

there would be a lot of impatience and tempers running (justifiably!) and a Border mired in that kind of uncertainty and lack of goodwill will NOT have the funding it has neither will it have as many members

Discussion Question: Will There Ever Be an End to Border?

The whole point of Border is the protection of Mikado City from those coming to steal trion. That’s a need that doesn’t and cannot have an end. Given the way the planet states are set up, the wars and occupations are more or less inevitable.

(unless something changes of course)

As such, Meeden needs to invent a way to keep those wars far from her shores. But, no character has shown an inclination towards that line of thinking. It hasn’t even been brought up narratively.

Border is only four years old and as things are it’s doomed to a never-ending war. Admin is even preparing for that through the away test and the distribution + invention of roles.

So that’s time and money and effort and skill and goodwill and trust being poured into a neverending. Shuttering Border would mean rendering all this investment and it’s very existence (and provision of income) obsolete.

(This is just a roundabout way of asking if Border should make the end of its existence a goal or keep risking the chance of large scale invasions and possible occupation forever. I don’t think this is the story Ashihara is telling though so I’m not asking for it to be told. I'm just thinking about implications of a Border that is trying to end the wars even if only for Meeden)

So Karasuma-sempai supports Kitora. I would imagine others might pick up on this and maybe even help out. Arashiyama squad certainly observe that Kitora helps Osamu out a lot.

Oh, Arashiyama Squad is definitely observing. Everyone at Border is so nosy though. Like, it's so bad the PR department canonically gets involved 😂

I honestly haven't had too many thoughts on Osamu x Kitora because the main ship that I'm obsessed with is Shinoda x Sawamura. They're not even main characters but I got their whole wedding planned LMAO (Tachikawa is the flower girl)

At this point I think they (Osamu x Kitora) are probably endgame but their relationship won't be in the spotlight until after the away mission. I doubt Arashiyama Squad is going because I think Border will want them to give the public mission updates, and not everyone can go anyway. Absence-make-the-heart-grow-fonder-type-deal, ya know?
