Kevlar Inventor Stephanie Kwolek Dead at 90

As one of the few pioneering female chemists in the 1960s, Stephanie Kwolek invented the flexible, tougher than steel fibers that were used to create life-saving body armor for law enforcement and soldiers.

Kwolek died this week at the age of 90, her co-workers at DuPont, the chemical company where Kwolek worked, confirmed to ABC News.

"She leaves a wonderful legacy of thousands of lives saved and countless injuries prevented by products made possible by her discovery," DuPont CEO Ellen Kullman said in a statement.

In 1965, Kwolek devised a liquid crystal solution that could be cold-spun. Nearly half a century later, her discovery and legacy have endured through a variety of goods ranging from bulletproof vests to sports rackets and smartphones.

Earlier this week, the one millionth vest using the latest Kevlar technology was sold, according to DuPont, showing just how important Kwolek's discovery remains, even half a century after she did what researchers had long struggled to do.

3-D Ocean Farming: Saving Our Seas

Our friend Bren of Thimble Island Oyster Company has launched a Kickstarter campaign to scale up his innovative and sustainable "3D" approach to ocean farming, which makes the most of the water column by growing several different species of shellfish and kelp, from the seabed to the surface.

At Drink Like A Fish, we highlighted kelp's nutrients and flavor -- but it also restores depleted ecosystems, absorbs five times the carbon than land-based plants, and has huge potential as a biofuel. A network of kelp farms half the size of Maine could replace all the oil in the U.S. -- incredible!

Bren has gotten a lot of media attention because what he's doing is cutting-edge and truly brilliant -- but in order to be world-changing, he needs our help. This campaign will help him get to a scale where he can establish kelp's new place in our diets, our ecosystem, and our energy system, as well as teach his methods to other ocean farmers, building a blue-green economy, job by job.

As someone who has worked in sustainability for six years I can tell you -- this is about as close to a magic bullet as we're going to get.

Man, it's a GRIND!

Today has been an incredibly busy day. I've had meeting after meeting since 8 o'clock this morning.  While I'm definitely not complaining, trying to start something from the ground is HARD WORK.  PLUS, it's so hot out here I fear that one of two detrimental things will happen:

1. I will lose my perfect sexual chocolate complexion or

2. I melt like the Wicked Witch of the West (who was also Black, let me remind you!)

Whoo! I feel as though so many times people want to glamorize the world-changers, but while also neglecting to acknowledge or appreciate the tedious work that it takes to put things together.

One lesson that I'm absolutely learning is that one of the key characteristics of any leader is his ability to organize others, and motivate them to take action.  Any person can believe in your dream, but getting that person engaged in the fulfillment of your dream is a completely different story.

I am lucky to be a part of something so special.  I pray that God continues to give me the strength to endure such a grueling schedule.  As Leonidas once said in 300, "Only the hard, only the strong." I pray for your strength as well, for the world is only better because of people like us working to make a difference.

Never give up, never surrender.  Keep dreaming.
