This week, we bring to you the heart-wrenching story of the attack that took place two days ago in Kabul University campus during an Iranian book fair. . Gunmen killed at least 22 people and another 22 were severely injured. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for this heinous act. . The government has announced a mourning day on Tuesday as we saw innocent people die again for no reason. . . As @bbc journalist @thekawoon rightly said - . This week, we bring to you a story about a bookshop which is struggling to keep up. But the silver lining is - it seems like book lovers have heard them right on time and rushed to their rescue. . . We are talking about @strandbookstore (Strand Bookstore) in Manhattan New York. When its proprietor, @nancybasswyden (Nancy Bass Wyden) took to social media to appeal for its survival post the 8 months of pandemic, the book community rushed to make sure they survive. . . According to the CNN, “The Strand has survived almost a century as perhaps New York's most famous bookstore, with its "18 Miles of Books" earning diehard loyalty from countless tourists and locals alike.” . . But now, its owner says the store -- known for its seemingly endless stock of used and rare titles -- could become a casualty of the coronavirus.” . . In our new segment #worldofourown, we are going to bring forward interesting stories from around the world which have a strong purpose of reading, educating and enriching others. These stories can be truly inspiring for the reading community and it's only just for us to share it on Merrative. We kick off with the story of @walkingbookfairs. . Satabdi Mishra and Akshray Routaray started Walking Bookfairs with this conviction, stacking their books in a van and travelling up and down history. Currently, they are an independent bookshop in Bhubaneswar and Bangalore, the path till here wasn't easy. Initially set out as a concept of "book on wheels" they wanted to reach out to the whole country with books so that even the downtrodden would inculcate the habit of reading. In an interview with the @scroll_in in 2016, they said - "We will be touring 20 states – 10,000 km – in India in our mobile book-truck for three months. We have been stopping at schools, colleges, book fairs, residential colonies, public spaces, anywhere that we can park and open our book-truck to conduct public book displays where anybody can come, browse and read books for free and also buy books at a discount if they so wish." While they were going great, like everywhere else, Covid-19 had a huge impact on them too and it led to the closure of their Bangalore outlet on October 1st.
