Today is #WorldRiverDay. @azmi5779 (🙏🏼😘) invited me to join him in an event organised by @EcoKnights, right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. It was a @RiverOfLifeKL public outreach programme. I knew that globally we have a single use plastic problem. But seeing it for myself was not only humbling, it was very disappointing. The log booms placed in our rivers are set up to catch floating trash. If there’s too much trash, it will pass over the log boom, and hopefully the next one will net the trash. There’s around 150 of these log booms all over Klang Valley. The trash you see in the pictures are all from just 12 hours! DBKL & JPS have contracted 30 companies to collect this trash everyday! They start fishing it out of the river at 7am-6pm, & repeat everyday! The government spends anywhere between RM0.5million a month to RM30million a year to clean up our rivers. If only we were responsible enough to stop the usage of single use plastics, AND dispose of our trash responsibly, the government could easily use that huge amount of money on something more beneficial to society. It is our tax payers money that is used to clean up these rivers. When you throw rubbish out of your car, when you throw rubbish by the roadside, it all ends up in our rivers, and our seas. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE. I go hiking very often, and I find plastic bottles and USED DIAPERS! Parents, this is your fault. Not your children’s! I don’t know if my nose started running during this clean up was because of the stench, or the fact that I was truly upset at the state our rivers are in, or that I was upset with the mindset of our people. STOP expecting DBKL and our government to clean up our mess. DO recycle and dispose of our trash responsibly. This cleanup is not easy. It saddens me to see men/women doing this job, with no help from the public. STOP expecting others to do it before you get off your ass. Hey do you know it's #worldriverday went for a hike while the vegan went for a run. #letsgeterdone #getshitdone not have a great day pain wise but I still went for a nice walk and recharged my system. Sometimes a little tree walk is all you need.
