Knitting Machines | Illinois During the Gilded Age | NIU Digital Library

Mechanical means and tools to knit faster have been around since the 1580s, but mechanization took a leap forward in the 19th century. This knitting machine, designed to produce quite uniform stitches for garments like sweaters, was shown off at the 1893 Worlds’ Fair in Chicago.
