The WorldView-3 satellite sensor was licensed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to collect in addition to the standard Panchromatic and Multispectral bands, eight-band short-wave infrared (SWIR) and 12 CAVIS imagery. The WorldView-3 satellite was successfully launched on August 13, 2014.

Automatic solar panel extraction from WorldView 3 panchromatic imagery using connected morphological attribute filters. The method involves extensive connected attribute operators configured with mask-based second generation connectivity and non-increasing shape attributes. The operators are implemented on the Min-Tree data structure. All attribute thresholds are fixed and no adaptation is required. The workflow considers additional layers like the re-sampled land-use & land-cover and building outlines for false positive reduction.

The Most Observant Satellite in History Is About to Blast Off

The WorldView-3 Satellite is launching to space today with the the fastest, highest resolution super-spectral imaging capability on the market, with 31-centimeter panchromatic resolution, 1.24 meter multispectral resolution and 3.7 meter short-wave infrared resolution.

Here's what that means -- the satellite could prevent famine in Syria by identifying ahead of time exactly how many crops are being grown now that 2 million refugees, mostly farmers, have fled the country. This is a satellite that can help firefighters, because it sees through dense smoke. It can tell you when Iran has added a new parking space outside one of its nuclear facilities. It can identify invasive species, tell the difference between limestone and sandstone, estimate the number of chickens on the planet via its chicken coops, inform cities where all their manhole covers and mailboxes are, and tell the difference between a truck and an SUV.

Operating at an expected altitude of 617 km, WorldView-3 provides 31 cm panchromatic resolution, 1.24 m multispectral resolution, and 3.7 m short-wave infrared resolution. WorldView-3 has an average revisit time of less than 1 day and is capable of collecting up to 680,000 km² per day, further enhancing the DigitalGlobe collection capacity for more rapid and reliable collection.

Lockheed Martin Commercial Launch Services has set the launch date for DigitalGlobe’s WorldView 3 remote sensing satellite for Aug. 13, 2014. The spacecraft will launch aboard an Atlas 5 from Space Launch Complex 3E at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.
