Adding extreme insult to injury, recovering hostages from the Sydney siege woke this morning to bizarre insults from the leader of the Christian Democratic Party and member of the NSW Parliament, Fred Nile, who declared “the only man really there was the man with the gun". The comment made today on morning television comes days after Mr Nile called for the men who escaped the siege to be denied bravery awards. Mr Nile's implication - that the hostage taker was more of a 'man' than the hostages - is cruel, sexist and completely at odds with the high esteem in which these brave survivors are held by the rest of the country. There's no place for these comments in our community, and there's no place for these attitudes in our parliaments. We call on Fred Nile to immediately apologise, and then resign.
