Yesterday I received a message asking if I make 16 oz mugs. I LOL’ed at her, which I am sure was confusing. But mugs have been such a long quest. The story so far: I made (and still make) espresso cups. People requested bigger. I pulled out the wheel and threw 12 oz mugs. People requested bigger (and I don’t enjoy throwing on a wheel. Noisy, messy things.) I handbuilt 14 oz mugs, and really had that down. But @puzzledgoose demanded bigger!(Kidding. Asked nicely.) I added that extra 1/2 -3/4 inch at the top to get 16 oz, and the rims started warping. Not in a gentle, “that is handmade” kind of way. Seriously, unusably warped. So, the clay form I made to shape the mugs isn’t tall enough to make 16 oz from slab, and I can’t make a 14 oz and then add coil. Fiddlesticks. Obviously, I need a taller form. That will take me a few tries to get the proportions right, but I am working on it. Until then. Here is a photo of my latest fail. It’s so nice on this side, but the rim is laying completely flat on the other side. *sigh* Yes, I make 16 oz mugs, dagnabit! . . #worththestruggle #artisfun 🤨 #pottery #ceramics #mugshotmonday #ceramicmug #potterymaking #handbuiltpottery #claytalk #etsy #etsymudteam #clayartsutah #potterylovers #handmadeisbest #makeart #maker #lithologyceramicart https://www.instagram.com/p/Cda5sfMLWBj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
