it’s a month later that they take off the bandage, and he sees himself for the first time.
it’s a long, jagged ugly thing, stretching from the tip of his brown down to his cheekbone. his eye is forever sealed shut, the scar healing over his eyelid. he doesn’t touch it. it feels -- gross. disgusting. he feels like it too.
he’s lost so much, this shouldn’t bother him. he should be grateful to be alive. not like -- like his father. like everyone else. he feels sickness swell in the bottom of his stomach, and he has to wretch.
his conflicting emotions do nothing for his peace of mind. his mother tries to calm him, but he turns back to her, laying in bed.
he knows this is no way for him to act. he’s -- still the prince, but his father is dead. he will be king.
when he thinks it’s his mother coming into his room again, he turns on his side.
“I said I’m fine, mother.”
