Vaguess (Los Angeles, California) is the vehicle for the work of Vinny Earley. To be honest, I fully expected this band to be Australian rather than from Los Angeles. And this is really entirely my fault. I've come to associate Los Angeles with Uni Boys and Billy Tibbals - power pop/punk. Not that either band wouldn't like Vaguess, but this release sounds more post-punk than power pop. And as much as I've come to associate Los Angeles with power pop, this brand of angular post-punk makes me think of Australia (Ausmuteants).

Erste Theke Tontraeger (ETT) is releasing this LP - and this makes me think of a cross between Germ House and Wounded Lion (neither of which, oddly, are Australian).

The Bandcamp write-up brings to attention the title of the last song "Profit or Punk?". Great title, great song, and great attitude. The write up ends, "In summation: Save Vinny Earley, may his reign last a thousand years."

Christmas Island (San Diego, California) were active in the early 2000s and had a sound that meandered between The Clean, Tap Tap, and Wounded Lion. The fact that they were relatively diverse in their sound can be seen by the labels that released their music: In The Red, Volar Records (this release), Sacred Bones and Captured Tracks.

I'd listened to Christmas Island over the years and frankly was surprised to find out that I didn't own any. That will be remedied immediately. I mean, listen to "Poisoner". Couple that with the fact that Volar Records (also based in San Diego) is selling this for a mere $5 and, for me at least, this a no-brainer purchase.

Just when you think you’ve got a country pegged, Bandcamp comes along and helps rewrite the story.  

Lazy Octopus Records (Stockholm, Sweden) has some lo-fi, garage pop goodness for us.  Co SONN are from Vänersborg, Sweden, and as far as I can tell, this is a one many project.  Funnel the energy of Black Lips and Wounded Lion through the melodic sense of Jonathan Richman and you might get the idea.  

“VGB Trashensemble Vol. 2″ is a lot more clean than some of the sounds on Co SONN’s own Bandcamp page.
