Today's passing of Sir Thomas Moore, the 100 year old WWII vet that raised $44,000,000 for front line Covid-19 health care workers in the UK, reminded me of another WWII vet who raised $35,000 from his stretcher by telephone during a war bond drive in the 1940's. “The Wounded Solider”, a watercolor by James Tissot. The Prussian war fought between August 1870 and January 1871 profoundly affected the French people ravaged by the harshness of combat and humiliated by the conditions of their defeat. The conflict remained lastingly present in the works of writers, painters, and sculptors. James Tissot was among the artists who actively participated in combat and extracted subject matter for his art. In 1870, Tissot fought on the front lines. At the end of the Prussia war he may have soon after become a rebel fighter in the conflicts of the Commune in Paris. Because of his involvement in the Commune, or perhaps in a desire to find a more profitable market for his art, Tissot left Paris for London in 1871. While there he published a series of illustrations on the Franco-Prussian War in the work, “Defense of Paris”. Between 1875 and 1878, the artist also printed a series of etchings after drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings he had executed around the time of that war. These were gathered under the title, “Souvenir du siege de Paris” Tissot enjoyed depicting what happened behind the scenes of the Franco-Prussian combat, especially medical services. Many Parisian public buildings had been requisitioned to welcome the wounded soldiers.
