One of the emote commands in World of Warcraftis /dance, which causes the player's avatar to break out into a preset, choreographed dance. Depending on the gender and race of the avatar, the dance will differ, ranging from human males' rendition of Saturday Night Feverto human females' Macarena to night elf males' miming of Michael Jackson and so on. What is interesting about these dances is not their easter egg value. Rather, they map real world actions, stereotypes, and racializations on to fantasy race, which then correlate to particular ideals and values that comment on both real world and fantasy race. For example, trolls in WoW are considered savage, evil, headhunters, witch doctors, they live in grass huts on sandy beaches, and they dance capoeira. How might the conflation of these racialized details contribute to a narrow (perhaps racist) understanding of the Caribbean?
