Helianthus (sunflower - var. "Dwarf Sunspot")
The sunflower is native to the Southeastern United States and originally it grew in many sizes, shapes and colors. Those native to the west exhibited frequent branching and were shorter, while those from the east had larger flowerheads, less branching and were taller. Native Americans ground the seeds to make meal cakes, a valuable source of protein that sustained them through the winter.
At some point eons ago, someone spotted a mutation which was taller and had a bigger seedhead than the others, and the local indigenous people planted those seeds. Thus, was the modern sunflower born. By the time the Spanish arrived in South America, they found sunflowers cultivated by the Inca on an industrial scale.
However this modern cultivar "Dwarf Sunspot" reverses the flow of history. Barely one foot tall, it has a massive seedhead. In the original tall sunflowers, the size of the seedhead was directly related to the height of the plant. The taller the plant - the bigger the seedhead. However, modern plant breeders (in their relentless search for that WOW factor) have developed this strange little novelty item. What will they think of next?
