“I am a business major with a concentration in finance and I’m minoring in Spanish and accounting. This summer I put my Spanish minor to the test as I studied abroad in Peru to gain experience with the language and culture.”
“One of my favorite things about NC State is that there are so many different places to get work done aside from just the libraries!”
Summer In Washington
After I make it through my final exams I will have a little over a month to prepare for my next adventure, summer in Washington. As a Natural Resources major I have always wanted to see the Pacific Northwest, and thankfully this summer I have been given this opportunity. Through the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at the University of Washington, I will spend eight weeks traveling throughout the state of Washington. Here I will have the chance to learn about diversity, conservation, and field work. I will be visiting urban ecosystems, the Cascades National Forest, Olympic Natural Resources Center, Quinault Tribal Reservation and many other places. The best part? My entire trip is paid for so I do not have to deal with the stress of fundraising or finding aid! I will be traveling with a group of about 25 students from all across the country. This is the longest I have ever consecutively been away from home, but I am so excited for the adventure that lies ahead. When I tell people about my summer plans they always ask how I found out about the program. I am very thankful to attend a school that works really hard to make sure their students have marketable skills and experiences, because I found out about the program from an email in my department. While Washington might not have the sweet tea I am accustomed to, I cannot wait to step out of my comfort zone on this new journey!

Treat Yo Self: Raleigh
If you have ever watched the popular show Parks and Recreation, then you may be familiar with ‘Treat Yo Self’ day. If not, Treat Yo Self Day is when two of the characters take a day off from their jobs and have a major shopping spree in order to reward themselves for all of their hard work. As a college student sometimes we all need a little retail therapy. Thankfully there is plenty of great shopping in the areas around NC State so you can properly treat yourself!

Cameron Village: It is located very close to campus - there is even a Wolfline Bus that will take you there! Cameron Village has lots of great boutiques and restaurants. If you have an important interview or date coming up, this is definitely the place to go shopping for both guys and girls. Also they hire a lot of NC State Students, so this is great if you are looking for a part time job close to campus!
Crabtree Valley Mall: Located a few miles from campus Crabtree is a large enclosed mall that has almost any store you could ever need. They also have several stores that offer a large amount of unique NC State gear. Crabtree also has several nice restaurants if you would like to treat yourself to some delicious food.
Cary Crossroads: Also a few short miles from campus Crossroads has a Dicks Sporting Goods, Ulta, DSW, Bed Bath and Beyond, Best Buy and much much more. Crossroads is great if you are shopping for a multitude of items.

Cold Season In College
College is great for meeting lots of new people and always having new things to try and do. Unfortunately with all of these new people come new germs! Being sick in college for the first two times can be scary - you are on your own, do not want to miss class, and have homework to do. So thankfully I am here to give you some pointers!

Step One: Call your parents. They already worry about you, and you should keep them updated on your health. Chances are they will have great medicines to recommend, and if you are lucky they will even send you a care package!
Step Two: Make an appointment at the University Health Center. It is right on campus and very convenient. Normally you can get an appointment for the next day. However, if you are very sick they will take walk-ins. The Health Center also has its own pharmacy, so you can walk right over and get any prescriptions filled that day.
Step Three: Get some rest. No homework assignment, social activity, or textbook is worth your health. We all have “fear of missing out” and do not want to go to bed early, but your body needs rest to properly get better!
*Bonus Step*: Get your flu shot!! The Health Center even offers free Flu Shot clinics.
