There's Never an Ending, Just the START of Something NEW

This year has been jam packed with endless events, programs, homework, tests, ASB trips, work, and most of all FUN! This year by no means was an easy road, but it marked MANY firsts for myself and the Wolfpack Nation!  To start, this was my first year working while being in school. I was an Undergraduate Admissions Intern and a Campus Operator for the ComTech department, both of which served as great opportunities for understanding how campus works on an administrative level. Through these positions, I also learned how to bring students of all backgrounds to our great university - all while earning a little income along the way! Additionally, I  managed to start an organization that aimed to create social and political change on campus, along with maintaining leadership roles within another organizations, including Greek Life and Student Government (where I was appointed a Senator!). My involvements all aimed to create change for our campus and create an inclusive culture, which ultimately led to the nomination of my organization, sorority, and myself for a Chancellor’s Creating Community Award as well as an Ebony Harlem Award. My Organization, S.P.E.A.K., actually won the Chancellor’s Creating Community Award for Outstanding Student Organization!

Through it all, I am very grateful, and because of all my new experiences, I have found my passion! By taking a leap of faith, staying determined, and following my heart, I have found multiple paths to pursue to continue my passion as a career!  As I move into the summer, I plan to pursue social justice,community building, and public interest law work! My plans are not set in stone and neither were any of the achievements I have had in the past year. So I leave you with this to say: don’t be overcome with expectations and failures - they’re only leading you to bigger and better things. Just take a leap of faith, explore new experiences, stay dedicated, and follow your heart!

Service Opportunites

Here at NC State community service opportunities are abundant! Whether here on campus, the Raleigh area, Wake County, the Triangle area, or anywhere in NC!

Opportunities to do service never falls short! Whether you would like to help students, versus cleaning the environment, versus help build homes, all in which exists here in the area! Many students here either participate through CSLEPS, Greek Life, student organizations, and/or individual pursuit of service. The YMCA is even conveniently located down the road from the university. I mentor with their Community Hope program every Wednesday!

Here is a snapshot of just SOME of the service opportunities I have done this year either on an individual basis or through my sorority the Mu Omicron chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. !

Raleigh's Hidden Beauty; "The City of Oaks"

Being in the fast pace college atmosphere can get very hectic! I have realized it’s very important to find your safe haven while here before you crack! For me that safe haven is the many wonderful surrounding parks in the city of Raleigh.

Many may not know this but Raleigh is actually known as the “City of Oaks” for its many oak trees, which line the streets in the heart of the city. Greater Raleigh boasts more than 4,300 acres of parkland and almost 1,400 acres of water, offering recreational activities year-round. A nationally-acclaimed greenway system spans 152 miles, providing walking, jogging and hiking trails that connect many of the City of Raleigh’s 150 major parks.

I <3 DIVERSITY

Think and D.E.W.

The annual diversity week this year, “Think and D.E.W. ( Diversity Education week),” is one of the most jam packed weeks of the school year right before Homecoming week! Every year there are so many events to attend whether it’s picking up your favorite “I <3 Diversity” t-shirts or joining in for one of the many workshops or discussion events on campus. As a student here at State, it’s really a fun time to embrace all the different cultures within the university. One of the most exciting opportunities last year was the photo collage built on the brickyard of students, and another version is back again! The photo collage by Jose Chavira, from In Contrast Photography, will host a photo shoot for his COMPLIFY exhibit, which aims to deconstruct stereotypes and show people are individual people! "I'm late,I'm late, For a very important date. No time to say "Hello" "Goodbye." I'm late, I'm late, I'm late."

Many say time flies when you’re having fun…here at NC State that is the understatement of the year!

Students have been in school for almost a full three weeks! Everyone is hopefully starting to feel at home, having fun at welcome week events, getting used to hitting the books, enjoying plenty of university sporting events, and attending many programs thus far!

Not to Mention the two wins to start off a winning streak season!!

The fun does not stop there! Student Involvement has endless opportunities for students!. As a matter of fact, NC State has over 600 student organizations on campus! With the University being so large it can be intimating, but by finding a student organization to join, you will surely find your home here at NC State! Whether it’s a club on campus, community service, Greek life, club and/or intramural sports!

I personally I have fully experienced many of the above! In my most recent and passionate student Involvement, I took on the task of creating my own organization on campus! That’s the true beauty of NC State’s Student Involvement, if you can’t find your place, you can make it!

The process wasn’t hard at all! I saw an idea that was not truly embodied within any of the current student organizations, so I took it and ran with it! My organization is called, “Students Proactively Engaged towards Activism Knowledgeably” or S.P.E.A.K. The organization aims to foster NC State student talents and abilities for the greater good and to support our communities whether local, national or global!

As students, we are often busy with school work, jobs, family, or other organizations we may be involved in. Therefore, we barely have any time for fun or to really know how to apply ourselves and speak as a community on current events and issues.That’s where S.P.E.A.K. comes into the picture!

I want to empower the student! Bringing current events in the world and in our particular communities to campus in an easy, accessible, yet FUN way! All the while giving students a chance to join us as an opportunity to S.P.E.A.K. on them in a fun new way!

With all of this in mind and to wrap up with the title of my post “I’m late,I’m late, For a very important date. No time to say “Hello” “Goodbye.” I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.” In everything that students take on in college, it’s always important to put school first while finding time to balance all the fun! In college you must stay focused, organized and diligent in all that you take on whether class, student involvement, and even family/friends!
