You’re in the hull of a worn out starship, floating somewhere in the Outer Rim to lick your wounds.

Your friends, the people who trusted you to guide them to a Rebel victory, are all around you; they’re a mess of sleeping and bleeding bodies. Medkits and bacta patches litter the floor around them. For the first time in a long time, you allow yourself to feel tired.

When you let the righteous burn in your chest fade, exhaustion threatens to buckle your knees.

Eyelids flutter closed, there’s not much you can do to stop them.  A dull hum fills your ears, like you’ve suddenly been dunked underwater. You attribute it to the engines, the breathing of the people around you. Your chin drops to your chest and one of your braids come undone.

It’s a simple thing— hair. One that rarely gives you second thought. Braids and pins, just out of your face. When you open your eyes, a brunette veil is masking the right side of your face. A hollow feeling sparks in your gut and travels all the way behind your eyes.

You wish your mother was here to fix it.

It must be the day of firsts, you chide yourself, suddenly aware that you’re crying. There was once a time when you hated being fussed over and done up like a doll, but now-

Stars, what you wouldn’t give to have her dote on you one last time. To feel her soft fingers in your hair and hear her laugh when you protested with a royal pout.

It’s a heavy thing, one that you try to bury deep until you’re alone and no one is counting on you to make decisions.
