Emmrich looked himself over in the mirror once, twice, three times. There was nothing to fuss over, not really. His hair was styled, not a strand out of place, shirt free of wrinkles. His apartment was near spotless, as it always was. He wrung his hands together. Was that sweat collecting on his brow? He dabbed the moisture away with a handkerchief and took a deep breath. There was nothing to fret over. Sure, there was a wrench thrown in their original dinner plans once Emmrich discovered the restaurant he'd chosen was unexpectedly closed, but Lucanis had graciously offered to instead cook for Emmrich. Something about that felt inherently more…intimate than dining out. Or perhaps he was reading too far into the gesture.

Manfred quirked his head, letting out an inquisitive meow as Emmrich began to pace across the living room floor. It wouldn't be long now. Just breathe, Emmrich reminded himself. If he presented himself with that much anxiety evident on his face, it would only further complicate the matter. He still wasn't even sure if any attraction was one-sided in his burgeoning…friendship with Lucanis. But try as he might, his stomach still fluttered each time the two met up for coffee and tea in the mornings or whenever their hands brushed throughout the work day.

And then, there was the whole matter of Dana. Emmrich sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. Foolish. All of these feelings were utterly foolish. Yet, there was something different in the way she spoke the other night, in the way she felt in his arms. If he focused on the sensation, he could still feel her touch in the hollow of his bones, as if she'd left grooves in the shape of her fingerprints. For a moment, it was as if they were in his bed again, under the cover of darkness, dreaming about their future.

How had he managed to get himself into this mess in the first place?

WIP Wednesday

I felt compelled to share something after @woundedsoul12 tagged me this week, because I SWEAR, I'm working on chapter 14 of Parallel Lines (sorry it's taking so long). So here, have a tiny snippet from that.

Crystalline waters and white sands greet them on the small beach. Dana turns towards Emmrich and Lucanis, planting her hands on her hips as she takes in a deep breath.

"Still untouched," she says, a soft grin spreading across her face. "So. What do you think?"

The gentle waves rolling up to the shore, clear skies, the hum of insects around them. She looks at peace. At home. She is home. This is her home.

"It's lovely, darling." Emmrich fights to return her grin, her enthusiasm. This place is lovely, but try as he might, he finds himself incapable of picturing her expressing that same joy while surrounded by the interiors of the Grand Necropolis. She was made for sunshine, and the sunlight never reaches the depths of the place that raised him.
