Arthur blinked back tears as he stood in the front hallway of his uncle's house, looking around with trepidation. The lady who called herself his social worker had told him he had to leave his home; that he'd have to say good bye to all of his friends, his teachers, and everything he'd so far known in his short ten years of life. She'd told him his parents weren't coming back, so he had to go somewhere where there was someone who could take care of him. He had been a little insulted by her tone, given that he was ten and he knew full well what had happened to his parents. Though he sort of wished he were six again, when he still didn't know what death was, before his mother's bird had died and he'd been asked to decorate a box for it to be buried in their back yard in.
He held a small bundle of papers against his chest; letters from friends and classmates wishing him well in his new home in the states. He already hated it. His bags had already brought inside, and he'd been told the rest of his belongings would follow shortly after, and now he was stood in front of his uncle, angry frown on his face as he tried desperately not to cry. The boys at school made fun of him when he cried.
He remembered his uncle relatively well, though he didn't visit often. He was his father's brother, and although they looked a lot alike, his uncle was shorter and stockier, and he could remember he was more gruff than his father, his voice more coarse. The beard was different, too. He recalled his mother once complaining about his father growing a beard, so he had shaved, though he stubbornly kept a mustache to bug her. The thought only made fresh tears spring to his eyes, knowing he would never hear her chastising words towards his father again. That now he would be stuck here with his uncle, who he didn't know overly well and looked so much like his father, but was so different. It hurt.
Anger welled in his tiny chest and he bristled at his uncle, clutching his letters closer to his chest, nearly crushing them as he finally let his tears roll down his cheeks. "I hate it here! Why did you make me move away from everyone?!" He hiccuped as he lost his composure, practically snarling at his uncle, "Why did you make me leave?! Why?"
