Hey guys, big fan, love the website, and After Hours is pure genius. I've heard from your podcasts that anyone can write for you guys. How does one go about pitching an article idea?
DUDE DUDE DUDE DUDE THAT IS OUR FAVORITE QUESTION IN THE WORLD AND THIS IS THE ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION
I started pitching here six years ago, with zero writing credits to my name and no professional experience whatsoever. I was a college drop-out working a minimum-wage job when I made the fateful decision to join the Cracked writer's workshop, which is just a private message board where people like you submit article ideas and the editors work with you to get them published on the site.
Today I work for Cracked full-time. Last month, I signed my first book deal, with Plume Publishing. And I'm far from the only Cracked writer who started out pitching articles and eventually used my work here as a springboard to a stack of cash and my very own ISBN number: David Wong, Kathy Benjamin, Robert Brockway, Asher Cantrell, Dan O'freaking Brien, Jacopo Della Quercia, C. Coville, Wayne Gladstone, and Winston Rowntree have all signed book deals over the last few years. Some of them multiple times.
Activate Your Brain's Writing Lobe (for Money and Fun!)
hello cracked! I've an article in the works I'd love for you guys to look at, but I'm SO NERVOUS to submit it to the forums. Could you spare some encouraging words?
Yes. Yes. A thousand times yes.
Also this L.A. street art (most likely by this artist) might help if you’re more of a visual learner:
You know we want to pay you crazy money to write for us. But did you know there are all kinds of writing we're looking for? From articles to Quick Fixes to our video macros (which pull together the funniest and most amazing things about animals, movies, and more), our forums are your playground. GO HAVE SOME FUN.
"Let me tell you an inspiring story about me: Four years ago, I had completely given up on my lifelong dream of being a professional writer. I worked at a job I hated, lived in a city I hated, and collected food stamps because that job I hated didn't even pay a living wage. Then I clicked that link and joined the workshop, and over the next few years, the editors taught me everything I needed to know to build an entire career doing this stuff. And look at me now: I test drove a BMW last week! I mean, I didn't buy it, but I looked presentable enough for the guy to let me get behind a 3.8-liter V8 engine and do anything I wanted." -- JF Sargent, from his attempt to give you our money
Want to write for Cracked? You can start right now (and get paid). Look, it's simple: We want your good content because we want to be the best. We let anyone join because good ideas can come from anywhere. The whole point of the workshop is to make pitching us articles as easy as possible. We don't want any barrier between your crazy ideas and our money.
"We will pay you real world money to sit on your ass and type words with your electric word machine. No tricks, no catches, no hoops to jump through, and more importantly, you get paid when your article is finished -- no waiting until it runs on the site. You're all like, "Here's my draft," and we're all like, "Have some money, Tito." You don't even have to be named Tito! ... But here's the best thing: You don't have to have even one second's worth of experience in writing. We take absolutely everyone who clicks this link and follows the instructions. The only way it could be easier is if we personally showed up to your house and clicked the button for you. If I had the time, I would absolutely do that, because clicking that button changed my life in major ways." -- John Cheese
