Write because you love it. Write because there are stories inside of you that must be told. Write because it makes you happy . . . even when you hate it, you still love it.
Write for any other reason, and it will make you miserable.
It is rare for a writer to make quite a lot of money. J.K Rowling. Nora Roberts. James Patterson. Stephen King. These are not the norm. If you write for money, you will come to hate it. Writing will become a chore and a disappointment.
Write only for recognition and you'll find yourself alone. Lonely. Miserable. You won't ever find what you need, and it'll leave you hollow.
The trick truly is to write because this is something you need for yourself. Write because it's a love of storytelling. Of pen on paper. The sound your keyboard makes as you tap the keys and the joy of seeing pages filling with words. The strange feeling of euphoria that comes from typing that final sentence and seeing something you've spent weeks-months-years working on completed.
Write for the love of writing. Anything else is shallow and empty
Dear Fandom: I love you.
Man, I love fanfiction. The more advice, etc. I read, the more I love fanfiction. I follow a tumblr that doles out writing advice (a tricky proposition at the best of times), and someone responded to it with this: If you're going to put something on the Internet, I suggest you only do so if it will help you. Post something in order to proof it, or get a different view of it. Don't put it up in the hope that someone else will read it and tell you you're amazing, because no one but writers care about writing, and they're likely to be either unimpressed or shudder with seething hate because you're better than them. Either way, you're not getting a comment.
This is clearly written by someone who has never read, kudosed, written, posted or commented upon, fanfiction. It actually makes me kind of sad that regular fiction-writing is clearly such an isolating and combative experience, minus any community goodwill and support: how can you learn like that? All the best learning happens in groups. Writing isn't something you have to experience on your own, in a cave, or something. Writing can be shared joy. I know lots of people (writers, mostly) say fanfiction is terrible and teaches you nothing, but they are so obviously wrong and laughably so. And while we're at it, can I just say: why are writers such bloody capitalists? I have read advice on writing that has you ask yourself, would someone pay for this idea if it were a book? As if the only judge of whether an idea is a good one or not is whether or not someone would pay for it. Is this the way we judge any other form of art? Did Van Gogh only become a good painter after someone started actually buying his work? Writing specifically for the market is hardly a good creativity-driver. My ex-husband (let me put a special emphasis on the ex) told me I wasn't really writing anything at all unless I had specific plans to publish it. (Yeah.) I don't know why this particular form of art is only valid if the market wants it, but this is another reason why I love fanfiction. No one here is trying to make money. We're just playing around with ideas and characters and enjoying the hell out of the process and each other. That seems so healthy to me. And it's a great place to experiment and learn and see what resonates with people. Not to be exploitative, just to learn about the structure of stories and the things that people love to read. I've learned so much from reading and writing fanfiction, I can't even tell you. Everything I know (which admittedly isn't that much, but still!) I learned from all the people around me who write, give feedback, argue, and opine about, fanfiction. It's also a great demonstration for how a typically isolating creative endeavour can be communal and shared. This is the kind of writing community I really never want to be without. I am currently writing original fiction just to see if I can, but I've done everything I can to make it feel as much like a fannish experience as possible. Because the fannish writing experience is amazing. And I'm totally going back to it once I'm finished this. Dear fandom: I love you. Never change. <3
