Intro!

I will fix this later. Maybe. One hopes.

I identify as a writer and am working my way toward thinking about publishing said writing. Right now I am writing urban fantasy. After that I plan to write fantasy. Then some science fiction. I am trying to hold it the ideas down to a sane level because those genres already mean there are 10 books for me to finish. My fantasy works in progress are (partly, somewhat vaguely, and very innacuratly) related to Celtic mythology.

I write for adults (and am one), and while some characters are very hormone fueled, it is fade to black at most, so I think I have lost out on the spicy market. Some characters do not get romances, some books are romance focused, so it's a scale. A lot of my characters are some type of queer, but not all. And a lot are on a spectrum, which may be intentional or may be me thinking all humans are like this.

People who have critiqued for me have called my writing warm, comfortable, captivating and vivid. I am on a never-ending mission to learn more and be better, but this gives me hope!

In biology they told us that the eye doesn't actually see everything in the room, it fills in most of it from memory and assumption. your brain is just confidently making stuff up about what's probably there and you believe it because you have no reason not to. and i thought that was just a vision fact but actually it's the most important thing i know about unreliable narrators. your character isn't lying. they genuinely see the room they expect to see. that's so much scarier.

writing is so funny because i could write nonstop for 9hrs and then hit a block where im like "how do i transition between this moment and the next?" and then i just dont touch it for 6 months

Serious advice tho if this happens, it's likely because you already wrote past the end of the scene and wandered too far from the more logical transition point, and you should go back to the last time the writing felt "unforced" and cut everything after.

You can also just skip the transition. Really good writing can span years in a single sentence, like you can just authoritatively state fact and your reader will go with it.

When I was writing my fic last few months the strategy I used was "just skip all the scenes I don't want to write" and it worked great in my opinion

I never used to do sprints. Then I realized it is a good way to get started writing when my executives aren't functioning. They made me do it is much easier than making myself do it.

I feel like when I say ‘relatable’ what I really mean is ‘resonant.’ I don’t want characters who I feel are like me, I want characters who have emotions so strong I can feel them through the page.

I think this is important because a lot of us forget the power of stories to make us feel things about characters who are not like us, who have experienced things that we never will. The purpose of listening to someone else's story should not necessarily be identification, but understanding.

The “draw” of AI doesn’t work on me for the same reason that the Ring couldn’t tempt Samwise. Because I LIKE to write. I like to make things, I like the process of making things, instead of just the end result.

I want a character who is touch averse and everyone's cool about it. Everyone respects this boundary. Nobody thinks they're weird or rude, nobody tries to "fix" them with a hug, nobody even tries to talk them into getting hugged. They show love and care for other characters in nonphysical ways and the others do the same for them. Because love does not require physical contact.
