“Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you’ve written, then pass on to at least five other writers.”
Tagged by @mdecarabas and @allisonryder
I’m doing this a bit differently than everybody else--rather than a top 5, I’m going to categorize them, because I tend to think of them as being in different categories.
My favorite humor piece:
A Wild Night - Simmons finds out he isn't quite himself when he drinks to impress a girl.
For an RvB fan, I find I’m actually not so great at humor, but this piece kind of wrote itself and I’m quite proud of it. I aspire to achieve a similar level of humor in the future.
My favorite AU piece:
The Absent Sting - After the Director is convicted for his role in the Project, he waits in vain for the mercy of death.
I wrote this some time ago, before we knew what would happen to Leonard, and I still really love the comparison he makes to Orpheus in here. Leonard is so damn pretentious sometimes.
My favorite character study:
Introductions - Every member of a team needs to know the others. Meeting them isn't always what you expect, though. Tex and North, Theta's first time meeting Tex.
This little piece is my oneshot that got the most notes on tumblr, and so I have a lot of affection for it just because of that. I like the tension in it though, the way Theta and North don’t really know what Tex is thinking.
My favorite poem:
The Allenic Edda - The saga of a love that ended in catastrophe And what he wouldn't do when he received another chance.
Okay, so I only have two poems on my page. But despite how pretentious this is, I really love how it came together in the correct meter and everything.
My favorite longfic:
Keystone - He could never forget her, and his memories were the keystone in the center of everything he was. Yet it is said we are not human beings but human becomings. Leonard Church was no exception.
What can I say? This is my baby, the one that started it all, and I’m still working diligently on it. It’s important to me and it means more to me than any other when someone new reads and reviews it.
Tagging @nogoawayok, @eyeb0t, @queseraawesome, @ir-anuk, and @delkios. (Obviously, considering who I’m tagging, don’t feel obliged to nominate your fics from any particular fandom--just your personal favs. That’s what the meme is about, after all!)
I got tagged to do this meme so long ago I don’t remember who tagged me or when it was. I look at it every once in a while and laugh because it seems to imply I’m consistent at anything whatsoever.
Is there a snack you like to eat while writing?
Not anything in particular, and actually I tend to halt things if I need to eat. So I guess the answer to this one is no.
What time of day do you usually write?
This is wildly inconsistent, and mostly depends on when my kids are busy so that they’re leaving me alone. Still, most of my writing tends to take place late at night because it usually takes that long to get my act together and actually do it.
Where do you write?
Either in bed or at my desk. When we lived at our old house I did a lot of writing on the back patio in nice weather, but that’s not an option at this house.
How often do you write a new novel?
I’ve been working on the same novel-length fic since 2010, so.
Do you listen to music while you write?
YES, so much music. I have a playlist for every one of my WIPs. Having specific music that goes along with a work seems to help me a lot.
What’s your writing utensil? Paper or laptop?
Laptop, for sure. I don’t like putting things down on paper because it’s harder to edit.
Do you have a special pre-writing ritual?
Nope, unless you count goofing off for multiple hours in advance of actually getting started.
What do you do to get into the writing mood?
Listen to my playlist for that particular fic, reread the stuff I’ve already written for it (which is a terrible habit tbh), goofing off for a few hours before starting.
What do you always have near the place you write?
Coffee cup or water jug.
Do you have a reward system for word counts?
No, but I probably should.
Is there anything else about your writing process your readers don’t know?
I rely way too much on ‘feeling like’ writing, which is why I’ve ended up with several year-long gaps in publishing Keystone. When I go through periods where I’m pressing through, I do a lot better.
I’m not going to tag anyone because it’s been so long since this went around I forget who all did it. So if you don’t remember doing this meme and feel like doing it, consider yourself tagged.
Do you have any in-progress Stranger Things fics?
I have a file of idea notes, and I wrote the first of those ideas last night, but I haven’t drafted anything else yet! You know me, though, as soon as I get an idea it wants to be a longfic. So we’ll see what comes of my notes.
before the beginning
I freaked out when I got this and never sat down to write what I was supposed to write for it, but if I was going to sit down and write it, it would consist of Valerie receiving confirmation that she won the ROTC scholarship she’d applied for. I’m not going to sit down and write it though because I’ve come back to do it like 4 times and get anxious and don’t do it because the actual chapter isn’t done. BLeh.
