Day 5: Til Morning

Genre: modern retelling of Peter Pan

What first piqued my interest: I love fairy tale/classic lit retellings, for starters. Then there’s the idea of Peter Pan, which has always had its creepy factor, now updated to a modern setting involving gangs and a “euphoric drug that makes people think they can fly,” and...yeah. Can’t help but be intrigued by that amazing concept. (And concerned because OUCH, this looks dark!)

What I want to learn more about: The best part of retellings is seeing how the characters change and how they stay the same. So: How do Wendy and her family know Peter and his gang? What are those relationships like, and how will they play out?

What I’m excited about: Retellings are so much fun because they let us get deep into the things that make a story timeless, repackaging them in new, interesting ways. I can tell there’s some incredible worldbuilding and thematic stuff happening here. Also THERE’S A BAR CALLED THE HOOK & CLAW 🤣

So. The main relationship is a hingey almost triangle with Lia, Tybee, and Gil. Gil has been in love with Tybee for forever but doesn’t figure that out until he’s in a hinge with him and Lia. As he figures that out about himself, Adiran comes onto the scene, eventually becoming Gil’s husband. Lia kind of moves through the whole house, exploring parts of herself she’d never had known to look for otherwise, from threesomes with Gil and Adiran or Gil and Tybee, to sometimes lady on lady love with Rhia. Meanwhile Tybee is also dating Lia’s best friend Kyle, who has been Lia’s bestie/found family since they were kids. That’s probably the most intimate relationship in the whole group tbh. There’s also a pair of pets, Cam and Mac, who add further levels of confusion and self exploration, a sometimes fuck buddy of Gil’s, Theo, who is also the captain of the guard, and Cassius, who is still figuring out his place in the court, let alone who he may or may not want to date.

they spar.  apollo holds her mouth to quips , eliza to tired bones volumizing an utter dislike of the art form. “ iza you know magic can’t sustain itself and what if your on fight with someone who can you know not be effected by it.”  she lifts her blade tapping it against eliza’s throat. chuckles passing into a simper.  apollo is line of sport and so she lays out an agreement of winner’s rights.  “ how about this you get the blade against me in the next moments and i’ll do whatever it is you want, i win you have to wash all our clothes ?’  apollo is sure that she will not lose , sure that even though there were improvements within eliza  she wouldn’t be able to knock her down before time was up.   but what she doesn’t calculate in her ego is that eliza is studying something different.  has been since the start, where apollo was interested in strikes , she was more interested in the bodies placement. and so when apollo comes again, she turns her legs to hit apollo’s tumbling her down and her blade now  against the other’s throat. 

“ i think i just did it lo,  i think i just knocked you down.”   bewilderment is streched across apollo’s face as eliza sits down to meet her eyes.  “ and i think i get something out of you know .”  _________________________  i want to see you in the stars / especially for you.

Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?

Man, both suck but I’m gonna say summaries. Doesn’t help that most of my ideas are pretty derivative so I have to work extra hard to make them sound interesting.

Tried anything new with your writing lately? (style, POV, genre, fandom?)

Well, I am trying to write a branching narrative for a game I’m totally making. Does that count? I’m gonna say it counts. It’s hard because I’m someone who needs to have an iron grip on my stories, so giving up even a little bit of the control and trying to make things fit together despite variations is gonna be a tough time.

What other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)

I think the faery wip would make for decent movies? However I have been playing with the idea of making it into a webcomic ... If only I could draw 😔
