Artist Claims Schedule

We’re getting into the busy season over the next couple of weeks, so here’s a quick reminder of what’s going to be happening.

Today, 24th July - Artist Sign-Ups Open. See this post for more information and the link to the sign-up form.

Tomorrow, 25th Friday, 29th July - Final Submission Deadline for Writers. See this post for more information and the link to submit your fic. You’ll have until midnight in your timezone to get it in.

August 6th - Artist Sign Ups close. Artists will all have been sent a slideshow of the different fic summaries to look over, so they can see what catches their eye.

August 7th - Artist Claims Round One Opens at 8pm GMT. Work out what time that is for you here! If you’re not going to be around, you can appoint a proxy to claim for you. Just make sure they know which of the fics are your top three, and that they need to use your name and details when they fill in the claims form.

The three different Claims Rounds will be running as they did last year, so please see this post for full information on the different steps. Just ignore the dates on there, as they’re from last year.

Once all three rounds have been completed, we’ll reveal which writer wrote which fic and then email all participants to give them the details of who they’ll be working with. Writers will have 48 hours to share their fics with their artists, so they can get started with their art as soon as possible.

Uploading Your Fic

As tomorrow is the posting day, this post is a quick guide for uploading your fanfiction to AO3, as this is where all writers are posting.

1. After hitting ‘post new’, select the rating and warnings that apply for your fic, and list the fandom as ‘Layton Kyouju Series | Professor Layton Series’.

2. Add the tags! All of them are optional, but it’s best to tag characters (including original characters, but don’t use their names), general things that appear in your fic, and if there are any relationships that are the main focus, tag those!

3. Add the title and summary in the appropriate boxes! You can also choose to add notes at the beginning or end (or both)!

4. There is a box that says ‘Add to collections/challenges’. In this box, type ‘Layton Big Bang 2021′, as this will be the best way to find the fics written for this event!

5. Put your fic into the provided box! The best way to go about this is to set it to Rich Text, and paste it in from wherever you originally typed it. Note that AO3 doesn’t save the text, so make sure to keep the original document!

6. Once this is done, you can preview your fic if you want, or post it!

I hope you’ve all had a good time writing for this! Feel free to link your fics to your tumblr blogs once they’re posted, as I’ll reblog them to here! All art from the event will also be found here, whether it’s submitted or reblogged!

We are ONE WEEK AWAY from our final check in! This one is for both Writers and Artists.

Artists, you will need to fill in a different form for each fic you are working on, so we can keep track of how each collaboration is going.

Writers, unlike last year we will be asking how you intend to post your fic - whether it will be all in one go, or as chapters spread out over the posting period and if so, how many chapters you have.

This is because this year we will be staggering the posting a bit more, to allow readers some time to read and react to all of your fabulous work. We'll be announcing exactly how this will work, and when the posting schedules will be, once we know exactly how every fic is going to be formatted.

Posting this year will be throughout all of November, but all fics and art should be ready to go from November 1st.

Hello Whoobies!!!

We are just under three weeks to go on the deadline for fic Submissions!

Before the end of July 25th in your time zone, you will need to have at least 75% of your story complete (a first draft that hasn’t been edited or beta read is fine), with a rough outline of the rest of the story if it’s not completely finished yet.

You’ll need to include a fic summary for us to use for the artist claims. Remember that this summary is to advertise your fic to an artist, not to tease a reader, and should include full details about the setting and main plot points so an artist will know whether or not they want to create art for it. There’s more guidance about how to write that kind of summary in this post.

The form will include questions about content and trigger warnings as well as ratings - please be completely honest and forthright, and if you’re not sure estimate up on the side of caution.

You’ll also need to attach a copy of the current draft of the fic so we can check it’s all there. This doesn’t need to be your master copy of the fic, and we don’t need edit access or anything like that, we literally just want to skim over it to make sure it’s all there. Fics can be submitted in any format that we can read (word doc, google doc, pdf, etc.) but please do not submit handwritten fic.

Five Days To Go!

We’re getting so close!

This is just a reminder that if you are an artist who will NOT be posting on November 1st because your art is a major spoiler for the fic, you need to email the Mods at [email protected] to let us know as soon as possible.

Everyone else should be posting something on November 1st.

Writers, please remember to add your fic to the AO3 collection so we know it’s posted. Artists, please make sure you send a link to us and let us know if there is going to be more art over the posting period or if you’re all done.

Posting Info

Seems like we’re close enough to start talking about posting! My, how the year has flown.

So, first things first: All fics and art MUST be complete and begin posting on 1 November.  Everyone should be posting something on November 1st, both writers and artists.

Writers, if you have multiple chapters you may pace them out over the course of the two week posting period as long as the first chapter is posted on the 1st, and the last chapter is posted on or before the 15th. All fics must be submitted to the WHOB 2021 Collection on AO3 so that the Mods can easily find it. There’s no set format for posting about it on Tumblr.

Artists, if you have multiple artworks those can be posted over the same time period, but something must go up on November 1st. Art may be posted on AO3 or any other platform that works for you, but a link/links to all artworks must be supplied to the Mods. If you are posting more than one work, please make sure we know if there are more still to come, or if everything has been posted, and that all the links are easy for us to gather together.

Art may also be embedded in the fic if that is what you agree on as a team.

Do discuss how you prefer posting with those you’re collaborating with, and listen to how they want to go about it. If you want to make Tumblr posts with links to all of the related works, go ahead, we’re happy for people to do whatever works for them as long as everyone involved is happy with it.

The Mods will be making Tumblr Masterposts for each fic and all art associated with it, which will all be posted on the 16th November.

These will include the medals that you have all earned with your hard work. We will also email these to everyone who is eligible for them.

Anything not posted by November 15th will not be included in the Masterposts. There will be no exceptions.

Completed art for any fics that aren’t finished will still be included, and the artist will still get the medals they are due, but the fic itself won’t be included.

Hi! Just checking to see if there's any chance the submission deadline was going to be extended again like it was last year. I'm close but not exactly where I thought I'd be, and I know some other people might be in the same situation so just thought it was worth asking.

Hello Anon!

Thanks for reaching out to us about this - we want everyone to be successful in their WHOB goals! We had not intended to extend this year, as the event is a little more cohesive than it was last year; however, after careful consideration, we have decided that we can allow a few extra days for writers to reach their 75% goal while still giving us ample time to create the Claims slideshow and distribute it to our lovely artists.

To that end, we will leave the Submission Form open until end of day this Friday, July 29th.
