Tips for writing characters in-character for a story:

So I've heard of a few incidents and even read stories where writers make the personality of a character so OOC that it doesn't even seem like the original character anymore. And this is something that I'd like to address to new writers as a HUGE no no. Most of your readers who are familiar with the characters will be turned off by your story if you continue writing them like this (once in a while is fine and that too don't overdo it). So what can you do to stop making this mistake?

Get to know your characters well. Whenever you are watching a show, focus on thier personality traits. If need be, you can even note it down. Do they swear alot? Are they shy? Are they outspoken? Are they aggressive? etc. You get the idea. Use those traits of theirs in your writing.

If two or more of your characters are starting to sound too much like each other in a story, try focusing on what makes them different from each other. Note down their names on top, make a line in the middle of your page (something like this: |) and then write their separate traits that you pick up on under each of their respective headings.

Character sheets are also a good way to help keep your characters in-character but I've never really tried those so I honestly don't know how effective they are.

Last but not least - try reading the stories that they are in as much as you can so that you can get a general idea of how to write them from others. Sometimes you just need a different perspective. This is especially easy in fanfics, where people are writing the same characters or pairing in HUNDREDS of different fics. Again, you will come across some fics that mischaracterize a character as well but those will be few and far in between when you consider a number in hundreds or thousands. Again because most good writers know what a turn-off mischaracterization is and generally steer clear of it.

My number one tip for aspiring writers would be:

Write what you want. Do not keep it inside and do not give a crap about what other people would think of it. Thier opinion doesn't matter because they are not the one doing the writing. You are. And don't ever think of your writing as bad. I've heard so many people say "Oh I want to write but I'm not good at it." It doesn't matter if you are not, absolutely no one is at the start. But the more you write, the better you will get at it. Practice makes perfect. Also, read. Like alot. That will really help you in building your vocabulary, expanding your imagination and in giving you a general idea of what writing is. Read whatever you like, be they books or fanfics or even newspapers. Just do it. If you want to adopt a writing style that focuses more on storytelling though, then consume as much fantasy and fiction material as you can ✨

And let me tell you that almost my entire childhood revolved around fiction books, story books and fantasy books. Enid Blyton was especially my go-to. No wonder I turned out to be a fanfic writer 😂😂

Hello and welcome to my blog! My main aim for starting this was to guide writers of all levels, but especially those who are new and struggling, or those who have already started but want to improve, through the world of writing!

Everyone can write. You don't need to have a degree, or require any kind of training, to write well. As long as you have the passion and motivation, you're already halfway there. You don't need to write anything specific either - the best writings are those that come from the core. When you write what you really want, you shine the best. So don't be afraid or hesitant to put whatever you are feeling or thinking on paper (or well, writing apps, these days). Just do it!

꧁My story꧂

I started my writing journey from fanfictions, in 2019. And let me tell you, I had no idea what I was doing at that time. I had just watched my first anime, established some favorite characters, made up a story about them, wrote it, then went to a fanfic site and posted it there - without any proper knowledge of writing structures whatsoever, a piddling vocabulary, and an embarrassing amount of confidence (for that time, at least). I thought I'd written something really amazing - and then a user came in to tell me that I should space things out, because it was more like a college essay than a story 😭 I was, quite predictably, shattered, and spent a good few hours sulking over their comment. But it was my first time posting a writing publicly, and my first exposure to criticism, and it is frankly what took me a long way later on.

꧁Final words꧂

The moral of this story is that everyone starts from somewhere. And that somewhere is not always a good place - infact, you very often have to make it. But you won't know till you take your first steps, and you won't be able to take your first steps till you actively try. So if you really want to write, don't let any force in the world stop you - that's the only way you will manage to reach the stars one day (figuratively, of course. But just imagine if we could do it literally too...)
