A Very Basic Introduction to Layering

Onions, Ogres and Stories have many different things in common. They can make you cry. They can make you run screaming in the opposite direction. Sometimes they stink. But most importantly, they are all of them built upon the concept of layering.

Why layer? Layering adds depth. Writing is also like chocolate cake. If you have a chocolate cake, you want more deliciously chocolaty layers. If all the layers are different flavours, that’s even better. A multitude of different textures and flavours adds richness, surprises, and makes for an all-over better cake, and therefore makes for a better story.  Sure, I’m throwing a new simile in instead of using the original simile this post is based around, but one doesn’t usually get a surprise when you bite into an onion. It’s an onion – if you’re surprised at the taste, you might need to get out from underneath that rock where you’ve been living. Furthermore, if you bite an ogre, he’s the one who is going to be surprised for the short amount of time he continues to let you live.

So what exactly are these layers? They are what makes up a story. Good writing is constantly working on layers, with both macro (large scale) and micro (small scale) layers coming into play.  We’ll begin with some very basic definitions of some of the more commonly known large layers, or macro layers.

                                I.            The Plotline. This is the most basic layer. It is the crunchy center of the onion, which, if it’s anything like the onion on the top of my fridge, has green things growing out of it. It is the main course or feature of a narrative.

                              II.            Subplots. Literally just a shortened term of “subordinate plot”. It’s a secondary plot that runs alongside the main plot. Subplots can fall under many different categories. For example, I am marathoning the TV Series Bones (I kid myself into thinking it’s research for a detective novel featuring an asexual ancient harpy and her lesbian were-jaguar sidekick solving murders, but that’s an entirely differently story.). The main plot for each episode is based around a murder (surprise!), or how point a gets to point b. However, subplots include character romances, how characters related to their family (trying to get their son for Christmas, fathers being arrested) or coming to personal revelations (I really just ought to kiss that guy!). If the plotline is the “A” story, subplots are stories “B” through “Z”.

So there we have the two most basic layering concepts in terms of actual story-building. However, subplots can become tangled up in each other, and there can be subplots upon subplots upon subplots in varying degrees of importance. While your onion-eating protagonist is attempting to expose a massive plaque conspiracy and overthrow a dental empire, they can also be experiencing subplots such as wooing their dental hygienist, brewing the mintiest toothpaste at a tooth convention, or even just finding the perfect toothbrush. Subplots accentuate the main plot, and so they continue to layer the story.

Well, that seems simple enough. Ha, I bet you that thought that. Those are just the two most basic layers associated with telling a story. As you might have guessed by now, there are a million more layers that are associated with writing. While going through those basic macro levels, you are also going to be working on micro levels within those macro levels, by working on such layers of a story such as

dialogue,

setting ,

action and reaction,

 and description.

If you want to go further into layers you step outside the actual story and get into the process. you further get into layers associated with the actual process of writing, such as

Setting up the bare foundations (creating plotlines, brain-storming, basic frame working).

I just wanted to create a brief outlines of different types of layers in story to get more in depth on at a later date.  Personally, I have found that thinking of layers and actively creating them within my writing as I write has drastically improved my writing ability and the strength of my storyline and character and plot development.
