Help! I wanna be a writer. How do I start?
I gotchu, fam.
Writing isn't just "sit down and vomit words". There's a big difference between word-vomit and something that's actually good. And that difference is structure, developing your own voice, practice, and learning to revise.
If you treat writing like a CRAFT, as in: use tools, make good habits, and develop skills—then you'll give yourself better control over your writing. Yeah, tools can be kind of boring. But it's worth it in the end.
Here are some fundamentals to get you started:
Plot / Story Structure & Conflict: Even a short story benefits from SOME kind of narrative arc. You need:
Setup (the intro)
Conflict or rising tension
Climax or decision point (the "big fight")
Resolution
Structure keeps readers engaged.
Characters & Motivation: Your characters should feel alive. Give them desires, flaws, and emotions. Believable characters pull readers in.
Setting / Atmosphere / Tone: The world matters. Whether it's post-apocalyptic Seattle, a coffee shop AU of Lord of the Rings, or a hospital run by rats. Setting and tone help with the mood, theme, and immersion. Make a short list of rules, then try to stay consistent within those rules. This will make your story immersive to readers.
Point of View & Voice: Who's telling the story—and is it in first, third, or omniscient view? Is this story in present or past tense? Once you decide these things, stick with them throughout the entire story. Switching between voice and POV will confuse readers.
Language and Style: Basic spelling, vocabulary, and sentence structure are a must. Even if your idea is one in a million, nobody will read it if it's lacking in basic fundamentals. Good craft will elevate your voice.
Second, talent and ideas help, but writing is largely a habit-based skill.
Write regularly; even 15-30 min a day helps. Don't wait for inspiration to come, instead, treat writing like something you do everyday. Good stories happen when consistency, and inspiration meet in the middle.
Read different genres and styles. These will help you internalize structure, vocab, tone, and pacing. Highlight your favorite parts, dissect them, figure out why those sections work and how you can replicate it in your own voice.
Don't limit yourself. Try short stories, essays, poetry, fanfic, non-fiction. And make sure to journal and freewrite daily. This strengthens your ability to articulate yourself, and with consistent, daily habit, it will only get easier.
In conclusion: writing is a skill. It is not "magic". Your ideas, your voice, your emotions—all of it matters, and it can be refined into a fantastic story. But what makes a story good isn't just the ideas. Ideas are a dim a dozen. No, what makes a good story is also discipline, revision, and being honest with yourself.
