hey! hope you’re doing good :)
english is my third language, and i’m not very fluent in it. i’ve always struggled with writing and honestly never wrote much. in school, whenever we had to write essays or anything like that, mine were always the worst 😭. i also mess up tenses a lot, but let’s ignore that for now haha. still, i really want to start writing. i see so many talented people sharing their amazing works here, and it’s honestly so inspiring. i’ve been reading fics for around three or four years now, but never actually tried writing one myself. so i wanted to ask if you could share some tips or advice on how to start as a beginner. since you’ve been writing for a while, i’m sure you also started somewhere and made mistakes in the beginning — i’d really love to learn from that.
also, how much time do you think i should spend on writing? i can’t write all day because of my studies, but i really want to make time for it. i also get stuck whenever i try to start — like, my mind just goes blank. i want to work on my vocab too, and figure out what tense to write in (i know that’s more grammar stuff, but still 😭). any tips or tricks would honestly mean a lot <3 i’m sending this to a few authors too, and i really hope you all can share some advice and help me out a bit. also, my friend helped me polish this message haha.
thank you so much for reading this :)
hi babe! aw you're honestly so sweet but i'd love to give you my personal advice:
firstly you're so brave for wanting to start writing even if english isn’t your first language! honestly if you’re passionate and motivated enough to begin writing, you’ve already done half the work haha ;P trust me it’s completely okay to make mistakes as a beginner. personally, since i’ve been writing for quite a few years (though i only started posting this year) i have several old drafts of fics i wrote before and honestly they seem like total gibberish to me now 😭 but that’s just how we improve, i mainly got the urge to write from reading — i used to read a lot of fanfics (mainly physical books) which eventually led me to want to create stories in my own imagination. one day i just randomly decided to start writing never thinking i’d actually post and well here we are 🤷 i’ve taken a lot of inspiration from reading and honestly reading really helps with writing so i’d definitely suggest you do the same it also helps with grammar and vocabulary
also i completely understand the feeling of going blank when you finally sit down to write lol it’s happened to me so many times that’s why i’d suggest doing something i do myself: always brainstorm before writing a chapter or oneshot. i create a rough summary and a few steps i want to follow while writing so i don’t blank out and can keep a flow. instantly jotting down ideas whenever they come to mind also helps A LOT trust me don’t worry about making it perfect just write whatever comes to your mind and edit it later. don’t overthink it because at the end of the day it's about your enjoyment so don’t stress 😽 because no one's perfect at anything even i'm not. i'm also trying to improve everyday ugh
and about timing, since you’re a student don’t pressure yourself too much even writing for 15 to 30 minutes a day is great progress. i sometimes binge write for hours and other days i don’t write anything at all LMAO it really depends on the motivation!
all the best for you!! 🫂🤍
