After more than two years away, Tommy returns to Los Angeles and immediately learns that a lot of things have changed. He also realizes that he can’t outrun the past, no matter how hard he tries. That truth hits him the moment he runs into a certain firefighter from Station 118 while filling in as a soccer coach for a sick coworker. The feelings he buried come back hard. But he doesn't want to interfere when he sees a woman at Buck's side. He moved on, it seems. And that's good. Tommy always wanted for the love of his life to be happy. Buck couldn’t adopt Theo because of his job and life circumstances, but he tries to be the best father he can be. Theo now lives with his Aunt Felicia and her husband, a fashion designer. Their son Leo, a few years older, has stepped into the role of protective older brother without hesitation. The family moved from New York to Los Angeles about a year ago and settled in well. Everything holds steady until two things happen. First, Tommy shows up and throws Buck into emotional chaos. And then Athena asks Buck for a favor that pulls him into an LAPD undercover operation he never meant to be part of.

When Tommy flies into another storm to save the lives of some hikers, his helicopter crashes into a muddy field. It’s the 118 that comes to the rescue, and the moment Buck sees the downed chopper, something inside him fractures. He realizes that his feelings for Tommy are still there. They have always been there. He just buried them, convinced that distance and silence would keep the truth from breaking him.
