Day 7

There was no posting for Day 6.

Today's piece is from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the work being Christopher Wool's Untitled. I liked this piece because it is very simple but still makes a statement. If you would like to know more about the artist or see the rest of the museums website just use the link above.

First, tentatively. Ink was splashed onto silk screen in a soft "splat". Like so many years of parents warning to not make a mess still prevailed; but this was art, and art is messy. The ink was slung against the screen with a bit more force, and much more excitement because let's be honest, would you really miss a chance to make a huge mess in the name of art? The ink splashed onto the page in wild abandon, with it carried the excitement, but also anger and purpose.Ink continued to splatter the silk screen until nearly the entire thing was covered. With a last few splashes for good measure, it was finished.

Day 6

There was no Day 5 posted I'm afraid, something I'm starting to learn with this project is just how difficult it is to preform on a daily basis so last night when it was almost midnight and I couldn't think of a post, I just decided to leave it. So today is the Smith College Museum of Art which you can visit using the link above, I decided to look into the Ancient Collection and found this vase from ancient Greece.

The battle raged on, dust filled the air making it hard to breath, all around the battle cries of men created an inescapable dull roar. It was the heat of battle itself; no escape and no retreat, only the endless fighting. He raised his club and prepared to strike down his enemy who graded over one of his own using a spear. He could hear someone approach from behind; friend or not he had no time to turn around and see, he lunged forwards to strike...

Day Four

Today I decided to look at the Van Gogh Museum website, I've actually been looking forwards to writing about a Van Gogh painting since I really do like his work, he has an amazing attention to detail and color in his paintings (also I'm a D.W. fan). So I found this piece and though it would be an good one for a Tuesday; something simple and yet wonderful to look at. The cool thing about the museum website is just how great a look they take at what exactly was going on when each painting was created giving a great perspective on the inspiration behind each piece, check out the link above to learn more about this painting and to visit the rest of the museum site.

It was delicate work, he used such a small bush to carefully paint each stroke of the plants leaves and every shade of color on the pot that held it. The, greens, browns, and yellows; a tinge of red. And a sea of blue- gray only broken by the red pattern in the background. He stepped back to admire his subject and make sure nothing had been moved out of place from before. He then gave a great stretch before going back to his work, barley noticing the passing of time around him as the day grew long. Still painting with each delicate stroke of the small brush.

Day Three

Today's piece is from the online photography section of the Portland Art Museum website. I love the quality it gets from the silver gelatin, to me it has an old yet slightly magical look. So I decided it would be fun to try a haiku, which it is true when people say haiku's are hard. Actually they are really hard. But they're also fun so here it goes.

Old and worn stone steps,

elegantly shaped by time.

Cast silver in hue.

DAY 1

So to start things off I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art website and found this lovely piece in the Modern and Contemporary Art Collections (gallery 828). It was the woman by the table that caught my eye but what I really enjoy about this piece is all the details that pop out the longer you look at it. The sun had set changing the sky to a deep purple, the air was warm and filled with conversation as people sampled grapes brought in from the vineyard and sipped wine commenting on its superb taste. She took a moment, standing by a table under a lone tree. She had been busy all evening playing hostesses on the terrace, greeting friends and investors while her husband still walked the vineyard, checking the plants and observing the progress of the year's harvest. He had been out all day as this time of year was especially tiresome for him and the workers, and she felt tired too. But this was their dream, a dream passed down to them through family and the vineyard's success depended on every harvest, every grape. Her shadowy corner of the terrace darkened and the air was warm, behind her guests laughed and greeted her husband as he came up the terrace steps. She quickly popped a grape into her mouth enjoying its crisp sweet taste and she smiled. It was a tiresome time of year, but well worth it.
