His head was in my lap and my fingers were in his hair. The blue glow of the television set bathed us in light but we didn’t pay a lick of attention to the scenes playing out on the screen. We were too caught up in the sounds and movements we created. We were a show of our own.

She was the kind of girl you didn't notice, not in a room full of people. She didn't strive to be in the spotlight and she never would be. No, she was a tiny glimmer you spotted in your peripheral. If you looked at her head on, she vanished, but a sideways glance... Damn did she shimmer like the surface of a lake on a sunny day. You could skip a rock across her surface for hours. Spend all day on her shores, soaking up the sounds of summer. You'd lose yourself in her essence. But you'd never know that in a crowded room.

We lay in bed, my body pinned to the mattress beneath his. The heat between us is scorching and I arch up against him with mixed feelings. A pang of something unsavory strikes and my chest tightens. I freeze. He stops kissing my neck. Our blue eyes meet. "Everything okay?" I stare up at him for a moment. I want to say no. I want to tell him that I don't want him to stop, but my mind is running with a fervor. "I can't do this," I say with my hands in his hair. He frowns, confusion evident. "Rachel, what's wrong?" I shake my head, bite the inside of my cheek, and look away. Gently, he grabs my chin and tilts my head back towards his. "Look at me." My eyes are wide when they meet his and I'm suddenly on the verge of tears. I don't know how to tell him that I can't see him anymore. After all, I'd agreed to the whole arrangement from the beginning. I swallow hard. "Rachel..." my name is a whisper that slips from his lips. I feel a tear roll down my face. "I'm sorry," I say almost inaudibly. Using the pad of his thumb, he wipes away my lone tear, "what's going on? What are you sorry for?" I let out a long shaky breath, "I can't do this." He rolls off of me and onto his side so that he can still gaze down at me, "You keep saying that, but what I don't get is why... aren't you having fun? Don't we have a good time together?" I avert my gaze because that's exactly the problem. I like him too much. I pull up the blanket as a newfound selfconciusness takes place. "Rachel, please look at me." I drag my eyes over to his and feel a clenching in my chest. "It's not that I'm not having fun Haven..." "Then what is it?" I shrug. "Don't do that." "Do what?" I feign stupidity. He rolls his eyes, "That." My mouth twists and then I sigh. "I can't do this because I'm so sick and tired of not meaning anything." He tilts his head and watches me pensively. Unable to bear the silence, I ramble on. "I want something real Haven. I don't want to just waste my time having fun. I want something worthwhile. But, that's not what we agreed to. That's not what people our age are looking for. And it hurts. My heart fucking hurts from all the wasted time. It's tired of only trying to semi-invest in people when all I've ever done is give 100% in life. What's the point in only doing something halfhearted?" I fight back the tears and curl my fists into the comforter.

On Valentine's Day, it'll have been a year. One year since I pulled you back in for another kiss goodbye. If I knew then that it was going to be our last kiss ever, I never would have stopped kissing you.

I looked up at him and when his eyes met mine I knew he was lost to me. My eyes were the ocean and he’d already been swallowed up by the sea and found his way to shore. He stood safe within the warmth of the jungle and I just gently lapped at the sand, long forgotten.

I'm the girl you lie down with at night. You whisper false reassurances in my ear. You tell me all the lies I need to hear. I eat them up like most girls eat chocolate. I devour them one by one until I'm so full that I have to force myself to eat another. But they're so sweet, so delicious. Your lies are everything I want you to be.

I washed your scent from my sheets but I couldn't scrub the memories of you from my skin.
