(29) “How much of that did you hear?”
(30) “Were you ever going to tell me?”
When he first started, going undercover was the best part of being a cop. There is always a sense of danger and adventure, but now the stakes were higher. This was the first case where Victor Tan forgot his role and fell in love with his target’s daughter. Y/N was the complete opposite of her family, who were the head family for the LA Yakuza. She went to law school and works for a non-profit that takes cases for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
They met at her family’s compound on the designated family dinner night. She had come straight from work, so she was in a floral flowy skirt, white t-shirt, and wedges. Tan was acting as her father’s new bodyguard, as the other one ‘mysteriously’ disappeared. They connected after dinner when she stepped out to get fresh air after dinner. He had followed after her, sensing that something was wrong with her. She had received a message from a co-worker, stating that one of her stalking victims clients had been found shot dead. They talked for an hour, before her father called for him. She slipped him her number as she left that night and they’ve been talking everyday since.
Tan’s chest aches as he snuck out of bed, sliding his phone off the nightstand. He watched as Y/N reached out for him in her sleep. He slipped his pillow under her arm, so that she could have something to cuddle with. He sighed, as she snuggled into the pillow. Pulling his discarded hoodie, Victor slid into his tennis shoes and left the bedroom.
As he walked out onto the balcony of her apartment, he dialed his handlers number. It rang twice, then picked up. “What do you got for me, Tan?”
He sat down on her cushioned deck chair. “There is a shipment coming in soon. There hasn’t been any talk of a set time or date.”
The man on the other end sighed. “Okay… So, how’s it going with the girl? Does she know anything?”
Tan ran a hand over his face. “Like I said last week, she has nothing to do with her family's business.” His voice hardened, shocking his handler.
“I was just making sure that nothing had changed, Victor.” The man stated. “You are digging yourself into a deep grave. You’ve gotta know that this is going to end badly.”
Victor groaned, tugging at his hair. “I know, Serg. I know. I didn’t mean to fall in love with her, but I am glad that I did. She is good, completely and utterly good.” Victor zoned out, not noticing the balcony door opening and Y/N shuffle out. “I’ve never been with a girl, who would rather cook dinner at home and play board games. Serg, what am I gonna do?” You could hear the desperation in his voice.
“After everything is over, tell her the truth.” Y/N waited to see what he would say.
Sucking in a deep breath, Victor rubbed his face. “I can’t tell her I love her after it becomes obvious that I am a cop.”
Before the person on the other line could answer, Y/N spoke up. “Were you ever going to tell me?”
Tan’s eyes went wide as he stiffened. Lowering the phone from his ears, Victor turned towards her. “Baby… How much of that did you hear?”
Y/N took a step towards him. “Enough. So, were you ever planning on telling me that you loved me?”
Victor blinked, not expecting her to ask that. “What?”
She rolled her eyes. “I knew you were a cop, Vic.” She rested her hands on her hips.
He jumped up. “How?”
She pinched the bridge of her nose. “You talk in your sleep. I don’t care what you do. I am honestly just glad that you aren’t a real criminal. Now, were you ever going to actually tell me you loved me or just bail?”
He stepped up to her, cupping her face in his hands. “I am actually going to say it, but only after this,” he pressed his lips against hers. “I love you.”
