“Hey… where is Harding? In this world? Is she happy here at least?” He’d been mulling over the question for the last leg of the journey. He almost didn’t want to know, if she was happy with someone else here it might hurt. But in the end he wanted to know because if she was happy here with someone else he wouldn’t have to worry about her. She deserved someone to look out for her and warm hugs to ease her nightmares. He worried how strained and sad she might be if she was alone in this word.
Neve looked away from him, uncomfortably. Which sent a spike of concern through him. He had a swirl of memories from this timeline of Neve looking this exact way when she had gone with him to Treviso after the dragon attack. He’d been out of breath and the sight of the blight curling out of the canals had brought a dizzying ringing to his ears. And as Viago yelled at him, Neve had averted her eyes. The same expression on her face now.
“Neve?” He asked, throat feeling tight.
“Taash and her were happy together. She was happy.” She finally said, looking up at Zalan with sad eyes but a hardness to them that said she’d been putting on a mask to cover any emotions and carrying that sorrow for some time.
“Was.” He could feel the way his voice strained over the word. His chest felt cold but he needed to know. He remembered: Taash sitting in their room, looking at their empty hands. Saying that it had been a mistake. That everyone they loved died.

(Gist in shortform is that Sonic never left his home island because he got caught committing a crime at the age of 10 and his entire village never let him live it down except the librarian, who was the only person to stand up for him and take him in; i have a story planned around this, but that's a tale for a later date)
