but!

there’s also a bit of tevinter rivalry at play, albeit a subconscious one. the belief that ‘if your mages are so good, they can solve this themselves’ — of course, it isn’t until going back to a devastated dock town, and pretty much only dock town, does it click that, oh, of course the magisters aren’t going to stick their necks out and protect dock town when they’re almost all rich fucks. and, oh, of course a bunch of them were venatori or venatori sympathisers or willing to step aside to not have problems, something dock town and the shadow dragons won’t do.

basically, bc it’s framed as treviso v. minrathous, there’s this assumption that minrathous will come together to fight the attack and will be fine, that they can’t all be venatori. but they pretty much are (or are willing to step aside), and that’s when she realises how deep minrathous’ problems run. that it really IS just the shadow dragons on their own trying to fix things, and the fact that they have people in power on their side (dorian, mae) doesn’t mean shit.

#spoilers /#veilguard spoilers /#datv spoilers /#& so basically the only other bastion of ‘free magic’ in the north collapses.#(yes it’s awful and rampant with corruption but it’s the only other predominantly andrastian society where mages can exist without fear.)#& now it’s fucked & the scene is ripe for southern attitudes to come in & completely demonise magic in the north. in her country!#she’s very glad the south has its own problems at that point.#& the only good thing is that many venatori have exposed themselves again so they can get ‘em!#except then it’s shown in neve’s quest that they can’t bc corruption! & now they’re in power & making the rules to protect themselves #& then they ruthlessly k*ll anyone that even remotely sympathised with the shadow dragon cause / they didn't like.#she regrets the choice although she still sees merit in it bc blighted treviso ALSO bad.#but it was made on some very flawed assumptions too.#character study.#study.#ws.

couple more random headcanons from my work desk bc i cannot focus and don’t want to lose these. torture mentions below/

she frames/puts up the letter you get from the necropolis dragon spirit that says it wants you to live for a thousand years so that it can come back and -colourful threats-. the game doesn’t give you anymore, but she happily collects hate mail from her adversaries.

i’ve mentioned before that she doesn’t have a fear of death but, rather, fears having a painful death, and torture, which she knows is what awaits her if she fails

to that end, she 1000% asks lucanis about his time in the ossuary when he’s ready to talk about it, what the worst part was, how he survived

it’s probably something she also asks the crows about too — some of their torture survival techniques

those recommendations help her get through fade jail, too, alongside varric spirit. it also helps that she’s gone through lucanis’ mind prison before that, too.

bellara or neve, whoever is taken by elgy, has her horrified and she is eternally in admiration of their spirit and that they were able to resist and use his own power against him!!!

to that end (provided there’s no flinching/they don’t express a desire to not be touched), she’s giving them the biggest hug post fight, blighted or not. it’s so good to have them back, it’s worth the risk.

& another thing!

johanna literally stole a room from the necropolis. bellara & emmrich talk about it in act i as a room is missing. meaning, i want the necropolis to be glitching a lot more (ground shaking with room changes quite often, even more impossible to navigate with any actual purpose, etc.). & also for that to be part of why it's so restless/so many undead are about & why the watch has their hands so full.

IM SORRY my brain now refuses to stop & let me sleep. but one thing she very specifically doesn’t mention is that the gods aren’t at full power yet. bellara, neve, & harding know from the d’meta’s crossing discussion & morrigan’s comments, so it’s not a secret, but it’s not something she volunteers to everyone joining after. & is so glad for it post weisshaupt when they’re all realising just what they’re up against.

(as well, important to note that she, neve, & harding are the only ones to have seen a god using their power w/solas at the ritual. they were all taken aback - see neve’s: this is more power than i’d expect from a dozen mages - but they have some context. for the rest of the party, it’s their first time seeing a god in action / the full scale of the fight & uh, yeah, it’s terrifying.)
