I had the good fortune to be a member of the Western States Sweep Team again last Saturday. I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this amazing event and have great respect for the runners whose Western States experience literally takes place as far from the front of the pack as possible. Sweepers spend the day with runners who are fighting cutoffs, drawing on every ounce of energy they have to stay in the race, and often are coming to grips with a premature end to a dream they worked for years to make a reality. Flashback Friday, to last Sunday. Surreal. ‘Been wearing this all week. 51 years old. Smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years, from about 20-40. Quit smoking at 40, started running at 45.
