So. Lots and lots of characters and they all somehow wind up at the same place at the end of the book, so that’s fun. i like all of them, which is also nice. Kenton is just a little bit Classic Anime Protagonist (see like the Re:Zero protagonist for the perfect example of what I’m talking about) but he’s not an idiot the way they are. I am gonna complain that like everything he does seems a little random “oh! now he can kill a sandling! now he can’t use powers! Now he’s vaguely annoyed at Khriss for some reason! now he can use powers ultrastrongly, maybe sorta because of his dad but also maybe because of a random attitude shift? idk but now he has random lawyer powers!” where is any of this coming from what
But like everyone else is a good character, but we also really don’t know any of them all that well. Like we know a bit about ais and khriss &c but like i feel like we haven’t spent all that much time seeing their real motivations even though we have had them explained to us if that makes sense so i love both of them and i love n’teese and aalrik or whatever his name is and i love jon and his friend and baon and and and but. I also don’t really know any of these people so. we’ll see how the other volumes go and how i feel about these characters then
but honestly i think the reason i feel so dissatisfied about the book is bc it’s a graphic novel and i was expecting something book sized. I went into white sand expecting a short novel and i got volume one of a three-part graphic novel series and just. you get different content from the two things. and that’s not anyone’s fault i just. am not really a graphic novel person. I find them confusing and i always feel like i missed something or that the action skipped a step and that’s just how the medium works in my brain. All of this “idk what’s going on” isn’t really the novel’s fault. it’s my inability to parse images’ fault.
I can’t really judge this story because this is one third of a story! this isn’t the first book in a trilogy, this is the first third of a novel. There wasn’t a climax or anything, because who puts a climax that soon into a novel that wouldn’t make any sense. So I eagerly await volumes 2 and 3 so we get a full White Sand story. I’ll probably keep using the #wsmtl tag to liveblob them when they come. But yeah I’m glad we got to come to taldain! it’s been fun!
oh the trackt has a name! ais! also i should prolly stop with the “idk what trackts are” thing when they’re obviously a form of police officer it’s not all that hard to figure out
“YOU DARE ACCUSE YOUR BETTER?” well, i’m acting Lord Mastrell and you’re just a diemfen so. not really. i’m not sure why you think you’re my better actually
