ranking all planets in the cosmere objectively
Roshar: 3/10 no amount of native bird species, but there are still some from off world
Ashyn and Braize: 0/10 I’m lumping them together because they are in the rosharan system and have no birds and are horrible
Canticle: 0/10 this planet just. Completely sucks . Death world and no birds
Nalthis: 8/10 good amount of birds, have a lot of parrots and other beautiful avians, but no significant relevance for birds in nalthian culture
Lumar: 6/10 the primary mentioned presence of birds are seagulls (seagulls are still great tho) so the population/diversity seems limited
The Grand Apparatus: 3/10: it has Lawnarks which are not birds but are bird like so I’ll give it a consolation point. There could also be other birds but we have no idea
Vax, Dhatri, Bjendel, U’Tol, Obrodai and Mythos: idk???
Scadrial: 9/10 it’s supposed to be ecological similar to earth so that means that almost every bird on earth is on scadrial (at least post catacendre), and earth has a lot of awesome birds
Sel: 7/10 there are unique bird species mentioned (and more assumed to live there), but little actual worldbuilding goes into the birds
First of the Sun: 20/10: YOU KNOW THEM, YOU LOVE THEM, THE AVIAR ARE ***MAGIC*** BIRDS!!! BIRDS HAVE AN UNRAVILED IMPORTANCE ON FIRST OF THE SUN, SO ITS THE BEST PLANET IN THE COSMERE!!!! (also I know it’s the worms that are technically magical but the birds are the ones that do the things so it still couns)
Taldain: 2/10 dunno how many birds there are there but it’s likely there are at least some.
Komashi: 6/10 it would be way higher (BIG CROWS!!!) but I’m not sure how alive the birds are.
Threnody: 5/10 birds but not many or notable species :(
the difference between using water on taldain and lumar is so funny to me. like
taldain: water is our most precious resource, it’s what fuels our magical arts and what allows us to survive in the harsh desert. our most important technique allows us to create this invaluable resource.
lumar: if you spill a single drop of water anywhere you’re going to fucking explode and take the rest of us with you
If Cosmere Books Were Adapted to Other Mediums...
Maybe one day we'll get a Cosmere movie. Maybe not. But if I could pick a form of adaptation for each series while also artificially forcing them to each be a different kind of adaptation, where's what I'd want to see for each series.
1. Animated TV Show: Stormlight Archives
Someone--maybe Brandon Sanderson himself?--commented that Stormlight almost has to be animated because of the spren. In live action, they might look, well, silly. And I do think Stormlight would be great as an animation, speaking as someone who loves shonon anime with huge fantasy swords. Like all I want to see in this world is the Szeth vs. Kaladin fight in the middle of a highstorm while they're running across huge boulders that were flung into the sky...as an animation. That is, like, inherently cool. *coughs*
And it would ideally be a TV series, not a movie, because it is one billion pages long.
2. Live Action TV Series: Mistborn Era 1
Meanwhile, I think Mistborn would be great as a live action. I think the magic system would translate fine to a live action medium--I'm thinking of really good fight choreography like the Captain America & Black Widow vs. Winter Soldier fight from back in the day.
Plus, it would be delightful to watch a whole new generation of people go, "Wait...the big bad is defeated in Season 1? I thought this was planned to be three seasons long...?"
3. Animated Movie: Tress of the Emerald Sea
Despite being inspired by a book that became a live action movie--namely, The Princess Bride--I think Tress would be fantastic as an animated movie. It's the fairy-tale nature of the story...plus the fact that one of the characters is a talking rat.
4. Live-Action Movie: The Sunlit Man
I think The Sunlit Man would make a fantastic sci-fi-adjacent live action film. The action is constant, the stakes are high, it mostly follows just one viewpoint, and I think the narrative is straightforward enough to be contained in just a single film.
5. Play: The Emperor's Soul
I think this novella would be great on the stage. It's the way so much of the action happens in a single room, and so much of it through conversation. I think showing the Forgery through only stage special effects would also be a neat challenge. For example, when Shai Forges the table, it could be done through lights: looking dim and grungy at first, and then being lit so that it looks bright and new.
6. Claymation movie: White Sand
Since this is already a visual novel, it surely longs to be animated. But something about the sand theme makes me want it to be claymation specifically. I think it would make the sand magic look cool. No I still haven't finished reading this one.
7. Radio Drama: Mistborn Era 2
I'm not convinced this would really work, but I can't get away from the feeling that the western genre lends itself well to a radio drama, so I feel like this would be fun. I don't know how well the fights would translate...?
8. Video Game: Elantris
I can see two major ways this could go down. In one, you literally play all three of the main characters--Raoden, Sarene, and Hrathen--in alternating chapters. In the other option, you choose just one of the three characters and play through the game with them. That could be cool because there would be three very distinct routes. In all versions, as Raoden, you literally cannot heal: Any damage you take remains until the very end. For Hrathen, the choices you make regarding faith vs. doubt help determine what options you have at the end with a mechanism like in Detroit: Become Human. For Sarene, you have to manipulate friends and enemies, uncover clues about your husband's death, that sort of thing.
10. Graphic Novel: Isles of the Emberdark
I mean, Sanderson has done graphic novels in White Sand (hmmm...I guess I could have cheated and said that White Sand's adaptation should be a novel...?). But if he were going to do another one, I think Isles of the Emberdark would lend itself well to that medium. There's a lot of good visuals, from the giant monster that Starling and her crew fight (the Evil), to the glowing worm paste that Dusk uses--and of course the big fight scene at the end.
11. Ballad: Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell
Adapting a novel into a ballad feels like a hard thing to do, but if you were going to do it, I think this novella would be the choice. Not only does a ballad vaguely make sense--Silence is a bounty hunter out on the frontier, hunting down criminals--but it's also just short enough to make it plausible.
12. Shadow Puppetry: Yumi and the Nightmare Painter
Think of the way the nightmares could grow elongated as they rise out of the darkness. Think of the stacks of rocks growing dizzyingly tall. Think of the Hoid coatrack cutout just sorta being there off to the side the whole time. I think this would be visually gorgeous.
13. Musical: Warbreaker
So this list was at least 50% inspired by this post about Warbreaker being adapted into a musical, especially thanks to the brilliant ideas of @cosmereplay:
#Warbreaker the musical!?#yes please!#drabs don't sing #vivenna doesn't sing well until she gets those breaths #mr ariel susebron over here #so many fun things to play with there #Warbreaker
and @imonlyhereforcrem:
#Warbreaker is absolutely my pick for a musical #the theatrical drama of the Denth reveal and the use of a Returned leitmotif foreshadowing Vasher #UGH IT’D BE SO GOOD
I LOVE the idea of using music to underscore the number of breaths a person has, the use of leitmotifs to wink at people's other identities or past selves, and I think you could do cool theatrical special affects for the Awakened clothing.
Yeah, it would be great.

I started reading White Sand last night, and why did no one tell me how much of a babe Khrissalla is?
Wowser.
