"And I thought of the Albatross..." #WorldAlbatrossDay / #SeabirdSaturday / #SeabirderSaturday 9 years since initial conception, finally complete...being my submission to this year's #WSTC6 definitely helped finally bring this piece honouring & celebrating these magnificent species about! Inspired by the etymology of the Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans), associated metaphors, the conservation threats they face, & the semi-nomadic nature of pursuing a career in ornithology, conservation, & research. Unlike our feathered friends, we people may be "grounded" for now…which means a lot of scientific conferences have been postponed or cancelled…but the 6th World Seabird TWITTER Conference) goes on! Tune in with the #WSTC6 hashtag over on Twitter from Monday 4 May through Wednesday 6 May…You'll learn about some amazing seabird science & the people behind the #research, conservation, science communication, & even ART…I was lucky enough to "present" a piece in #ArtSesh1! 1️⃣ "Command of the Sea" 👑 🌊 Paper collage of Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans, Vulnerable IUCN status) …Using #art as a form of #scicomm can convey interesting info, bring attention to certain details, & facilitate contemplation of conservation issues! 🎨 2️⃣ Found across oceans of far S Hemisphere, they have the largest wingspan of all living birds…over 3m/10ft! Power to fly great distances over frigid open ocean, mainly just by gliding…with "dynamic soaring" method that uses physics of wind & slopes! 🌏🌬️✈️🌍 3️⃣ Those rosy bills catch squid, krill, & fish 🦑🦐🐟…those pink neck feathers?
