Last post I shared a photo that was captured by Voyager 1 in 1979. As you have probably heard, it has left the solar system and transferred into interstellar space. We have burst the solar bubble and have sent something human made farther than we ever have before. If all goes well, we should be receiving data from Voyager 1 till 2025. We can look forward to another 3.9 billion miles of data (currently Voyager 1 has traveled about 11.66 billion miles from the sun).

It's a space double feature! If you missed out on the lack of a space post yesterday, then today is your lucky day.
First up, Jupiter's moon Io is a bundle of volcanic activity. Actually it is the most volcanically active object in the Solar System. This picture was captured March 4, 1979 by Voyager 1.
Io was discovered on 8 January 1610 by Galileo Galilei. The discovery, along with three other Jovian moons, was the first time a moon was discovered orbiting a planet other than Earth.
A massive eruption occurred this year, August 15, 2013. The Second image is from that eruption. You can see it on the dark side of the moon.
Heads up: this week, friday, there is a triple transit of Io, Europa, and Callisto.
Joining Earth and Mars - A Uniting Crystal
Swarovski, World Space Week and the Austrian Space Forum have joined forces to create the most special crystals of this solar system. Swarovski will form crystals of samples from all over the earth and from Mars meteoroids. They can not do this alone and need your help. You (together with friends, school or organisation) can help to collect the samples. A manual for the collection procedure can be found on the website.
The final crystals will be offered to representatives of space organisations all over the world on Yuri's night to represent the dedication of the worlds population to exploration of the solar system.
