Chapter 8
Morning comes, optimistic and unaware of what horrors the night has left behind. The storm breaks into sunshine and a clear, blue sky. Birds perch on the railing for rest, singing tunes off-key to one another.
Inside, Castiel and Dean sit at the table, staring down at their hands. Neither of them speak. The clock on the wall ticks by, punctuated clashes in the silence.
Dean’s head is low, the skin around his eyes pinched. He stayed awake longer than any of them, watching the light, watching the waves for any signs of the lost sailors. It’s like the vitality has been sucked out of him, his skin sallow, his shoulders drooped.
Castiel feels as if he should say something. But he doesn’t know what.
Instead, he stares at a crack in the wood of the table.

The scenery flies by as the bus meanders down the road, but Castiel doesn’t see it.
There’s no color. He thought that the gloomy gray the sea held was chilling, but it was nothing compared to this. Now, there is simply a film of darkness over everything Castiel sees. Nothing’s warm. Nothing’s bright.
It’s all been bled dry.
The bus bumps and wanders down the road. Over and over, stop after stop. Castiel doesn’t bother raising his head to look at the signs.
The view of the ocean disappeared hours ago. Now there’s only rolling hills and farmland, repeating again and again, like a movie stuck on the same scene.

Dean comes back to the lighthouse with a spinning head and a heavy heart. He ignores Sam’s pestering questions as soon as he walks in the door; the What happened and Was it Cas? and Are you seriously drunk, Dean? that Sam volleys, one after the other. He falls into bed, face pressed into the pillow, knowing that he’s making Sam do all the night shifts, but he doesn’t care. He can’t find it in him to care.
As Dean closes his eyes, Cas’s bunk, empty above him, howls like a hungry thing.
Pathetic, John’s voice whispers in his ear, like pattering rain on the back of a nightmare. Just like you’ve always been.
