RIP my anti-corporate wacky surreal immersive podcast

It's still airing, but now it's just my wacky surreal podcast.

you will be missed because the mid adrolls are just too much. i don't really care if you put them at the beginning or at the end, hell for all i care you make both the ads at the end and beginning 5 minutes long. but why the HECK would you put it in the middle right where it's going to disrupt the whole immersive experience of your podcast? the whole point of nightvale is that you are not just any listener, you are supposed to be a nightvale resident listening to the nightvale community radio!!! the ads totally take that special and IMMERSIVE experience away.

But hey, maybe they're struggling financially (can't imagine that what with the amount of different income streams they have (books, merch, live tours, streaming on youtube/spotify/apple, sponsors, patreons, am i forgetting something?) and really really need this. maybe, they just decided that fuck it, principles don't look as shiny and good, because in this day and age it feels like just another cashgrab and as a slap across the face for many fans who can't afford the patreon/are already paying premium and still subjected to ads.

Sorry just saw somebody saying carlos is a bad scientist and i will not fucking have it, there are other people on this site that have said better than me that carlos was extremely capable in his own way. But here is what i think is the difference that sets apart him from lubell.

Night vale had always been a separate being torn apart from the rest of the universe, we have already established that in many of the previous episodes especially with huntokar’s explanations. Night vale has never confined itself to any of the existing scientific laws of the outside world because those scientific laws does not apply to it. Carlos didn’t understand it when he first arrived to night vale hence the clocks, but he learns to understand that the all the existing scientific explanations doesn’t apply to night vale and thats okay, it is a part of what night vale is. He accepts it for the way it is and continues his studies according to night vale’s own standards.

Now with Janet, when she first arrives to night vale she carries with her decades of knowledge she has built up from her career from THE OUTSIDE WORLD. And she is so confident with those knowledge she held she forcibly applies the outside scientific explanations onto night vale’s bizarre phenomenons. And by exerting the scientific explanations onto night vale for the first time the scientific laws of the outside world are applied to nightvale, thus losing its magic and mystique. In reality she didn’t even try to understand night vale the same way carlos does, by acknowledging it is different from the rest of the world and respectfully studies it according to night vale’s own scientific laws, instead, she forces an explanation that shouldn’t be applied to night vale to suit her own comprehension of the situation, taking away night vale’s uniqueness in the process.

This is just me rumbling because I’ve been thinking about this all day during work today and plz be patient with me if i made any grammatical or vocabulary errors or if you disagree, I’ve spoken english for a long time but it still isn’t my first language.

Spoilers for WTNV Ep 250: Father Kevin

I finally got up to Kevin's "redemption arc and... I didn't really like it...

I'm not sure if thats a surprise or anything, but to me it felt both a little behind the scenes and unnecessary.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the Mother Lauren stuff and everything up to ep 250. I felt like things were going along and Kevin saying something like "my teeth are my weapon" was real funny and in character. I loved when Mother Lauren basically told Kevin his god hated him (my favorite trope ❤️, give me more being so devoted you kill for your god and then they fucking hate you).

I liked the episodes, I understood the idea they were going for with older Kevin serving as the father he needed to young Kevin. There were definitely the starts of his shift in personality over time and interweaving Cecils issues with his father in makes a lot of sense. I understand that for Kevin, he's lived like a century to develop and change his ways on his own.

But... I was still very confused during ep 250. Kevins lines didn't really make sense and it felt almost jarring to go from "Cecil thinks Kevin wanted Night Vale to fall" to "look at Kevin be a not terrible person and parent this kid that is also him". We as the listeners needed to spend more time with Kevin and his change in character. Without us viewing that gradual change, it feels very out of place.

Part of this is 100% the fact I didn't feel Kevin needed a redemption arc. He's a bad person, he's done irredeemable things. The creators completely forgetting Charles and Donovan make this feel even more out of place. The whole season feels like it was written because the fans love Kevin and wanted more of him, not because he needed it nor deserved it. I personally think a continuation of Kevin should continue to have the really complex (bad) relationships the writers have given him. No they aren't healthy, but it makes him such an interesting character. And like, they were building it up too? It was going really well. I think they were running out of episodes to finish up his arc and should have instead taken another season to do it or give him a book, or have Kevin R Free voice more of his lines. I no joke think Cecil narrating over most of it made it weird... there was an awful lot of Kevin talking done by Cecil when Kevin has an established VA that clearly still works with Night Vale Presents.

Overall, strange choices all around are probably what made this not hit for me. Maybe I'll do a rewrite of it one day (would really just take like writing between ep 244-250 to flesh everything out more).

I'd be more willing to give WTNV a fourth try if I didn't have to listen to 5 minutes of self promo at the beginning of it.

especially since that got tacked onto the first like 3 episodes. Hello??? Let people get to know your show before trying to sell everything to them.

100% I'd pay for a version that was literally just the podcast. No 'buy our books/merch/tickets to live shows' because I can promise you I'm not going to those and I'm not buying merch.

But because I can't waste the time to skip all that nonsense (I'm WORKING WITH FOOD) I just don't listen to it now

seriously tho i’m such a huge fan of CarlosxCecil. it’s so innocent and sweet and cute and ahhhhh. I honestly wish one day i’d have a relationship like that
