Spoilers for WTNV Ep 250: Father Kevin
I finally got up to Kevin's "redemption arc and... I didn't really like it...
I'm not sure if thats a surprise or anything, but to me it felt both a little behind the scenes and unnecessary.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the Mother Lauren stuff and everything up to ep 250. I felt like things were going along and Kevin saying something like "my teeth are my weapon" was real funny and in character. I loved when Mother Lauren basically told Kevin his god hated him (my favorite trope ❤️, give me more being so devoted you kill for your god and then they fucking hate you).
I liked the episodes, I understood the idea they were going for with older Kevin serving as the father he needed to young Kevin. There were definitely the starts of his shift in personality over time and interweaving Cecils issues with his father in makes a lot of sense. I understand that for Kevin, he's lived like a century to develop and change his ways on his own.
But... I was still very confused during ep 250. Kevins lines didn't really make sense and it felt almost jarring to go from "Cecil thinks Kevin wanted Night Vale to fall" to "look at Kevin be a not terrible person and parent this kid that is also him". We as the listeners needed to spend more time with Kevin and his change in character. Without us viewing that gradual change, it feels very out of place.
Part of this is 100% the fact I didn't feel Kevin needed a redemption arc. He's a bad person, he's done irredeemable things. The creators completely forgetting Charles and Donovan make this feel even more out of place. The whole season feels like it was written because the fans love Kevin and wanted more of him, not because he needed it nor deserved it. I personally think a continuation of Kevin should continue to have the really complex (bad) relationships the writers have given him. No they aren't healthy, but it makes him such an interesting character. And like, they were building it up too? It was going really well. I think they were running out of episodes to finish up his arc and should have instead taken another season to do it or give him a book, or have Kevin R Free voice more of his lines. I no joke think Cecil narrating over most of it made it weird... there was an awful lot of Kevin talking done by Cecil when Kevin has an established VA that clearly still works with Night Vale Presents.
Overall, strange choices all around are probably what made this not hit for me. Maybe I'll do a rewrite of it one day (would really just take like writing between ep 244-250 to flesh everything out more).
When the weathers so good you stop listening to the show and go binge all the artists music.
imagine six thousand people read your journal every single day . thank fuck only like 10 of you max interact with me
New icon AND persona??
This is Vix (Vixen, like a female fox), he is a form of The Observer (similar to THEY who was my previous icon and is on my pinned post, you'll learn more about this one day). He turns into bugs when you touch him (so don't).
I suppose this makes me Vix... I haven't quite figured that out yet. I do mentally use him as me and plan to use him to interact as me, so... You can call me Vix that sounds fun. Or Nittle, I don't care.
Baby's first rent payment! I feel so old now and like im paying WAY too much, gotta love the economy :)
i don't fandom post here but. currently obsessed with welcome to night vale again and can't stop thinking about episode 221 (glow cloud, explained). keep thinking about dr. janet lubelle "explaining away" things as acts of both a disruption of collective faith and a killing of creativity.
we (as the audience) have witnessed cosmic horror as the everyday in that town for a whole decade. we, just like the citizens of night vale, take it as normal, or as adaptive to be normal. and then lubelle comes in and disrupts it to the point of death. she rendered a god useless. she killed a sentient river rock. even when cecil tries to chant all hail, all hail the glow cloud, the magic is gone. the faith is gone. it's been explained, unravelled, revealed to whatever kind of truth "science" has applied to it.
also, it serves as an allegory for how, when you try to explain your work to an audience, it kind of kills it? especially any writing that is absurdist or surrealist. explaining why the glow cloud even exists, or trying to pick it apart, renders it and the magic of night vale (both story and podcast) useless. the glow cloud is fun because it is a glow cloud that drops dead animals! we found out it was a god too! it has a child! isn't that whimsical and horrifying and brilliant? does it need explaining? no! and it's heartbreaking when it is! it's such a staple of the series and it's smart of joseph/jeffrey to play around with this after 10 years of creating and writing for this beloved show.
(also, if you decide to engage with this post, please do not share spoilers for future episodes, i am still playing catch up).
One of the plethora of reasons I connect to Carlos (beyond the fact that I, too, don't want you to touch me), is the fact he loves a man that loves the sound of his own voice.
I too, love people who do not stop talking. Your voice is so soothing to listen to and I don't need to do nearly as much talking. Great friend. Be the background noise that grounds me to life.
WTNV has shown me that I SHOULD post my old C++ code and pretend it is poetry.
yall are so fucking weird about gnc people. a woman wears a suit and she's "conforming to the patriarchy". a man wears a skirt and he's Secretly A Trans Egg. have you considered It's Fabric
Wtnv spoilers: like ep 240? The Boy stuff...
I like that Cecil doesn't recognize The Boy immediately. Like being his double, theoretically young Kevin looks like young Cecil. Cecil however is a million years old, doesn't remember his childhood, and doesn't look at mirrors so he wouldn't know what young Cecil looked like. Of course he didn't recognize The Boy initially as some version of young him.
However, once he sees that like bloodthirsty look in The Boy's eyes (and that hes holding a knife), he immediately clocks it as little Kevin.
Now I haven't gotten to the DOW part yet, but with Kevin now insisting that hes lived in the DOW his entire life, I like to pretend he's gonna insist that it's not him and is actually Cecil. No Kevin, only you like to kill people. You and Leann Hart.
Since it's Be Kind to Bugs Day
Due to the city's ongoing spider problems, only 1 in 5 Night Vale tarantulas will graduate from high school. Stop the Madness! Teach a Spider to Read!
Why are you watching?
My favorite style of creepy art is people staring down the camera like you've interrupted something you were not supposed to see.
Also this is Persephone (L) and Mary (R). They are "angels" and are very much in love.
wow this podcast is so cool. imagine if the fandom hadn't been dead for like ten years
