Pouring Out (#wtsdevo Psalms)
“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” Psalms 62:8
Sometimes when I pray, I find myself listing off things I want or things people have asked me to pray for. This isn’t inherently bad- but typically these requests aren’t what is immediately on my mind.
Somewhere along the line I formed some kind of prayer formula. I decided one way or another that I prayed in list form- going down the line of what or who I had to pray for or about.
Although God does listen to these prayers and they aren’t bad or wrong, when I read the prayers of the Psalms or when I read other prayers throughout the Bible I recognize most of them aren’t really this way.
Most frequently in my readings, prayer is a massive, intimate pouring out of the heart to God. The person would divulge crippling fears, sins or other heavy topics. The kind that weigh you down.
I realized while reading these prayers that although my methodology wasn’t bad, it was allowing me to distance myself from God in it’s own way. I was able to ask for what I needed to without pouring out my heart. It was a way for me to hold back some level of trust from Him.
When I do pour out my heart to God now however, I always leave the prayer feeling different. Feeling as though I’ve encountered the Holy Spirit- that I’ve grown closer to the Lord.
Friends, today as you pray- no matter if it is 5 minutes or an hour, really pour out your heart to Him. He is trustworthy. He is our refuge.
