Bad Idea

The party was enjoyable. Mostly because he had a bit too much to drink. It was getting late and he was thinking about heading back to his dorm to spend the rest of the evening with his cats. Nothing like being drunk, alone, and cuddled up next to cats. 

And then he felt arms wrap around him and suddenly someone kissed him. Much to his surprise, he kissed the stranger back, somehow forgetting he was at the base. 

In a moment he realised he was in fact at the base and a colleague was kissing him. Klaus whipped around to get a good look at who kissed him and saw...Abigail. Klaus felt his cheeks go pink. Abigail. 

Klaus never really knew how he felt about her. She was smart and he was an idiot for thinking otherwise. She was far more capable than he had given her credit and sometimes they butt heads, but he saw her as a friend. But had he never seen her as anything more? The doctor took a sip from his drink, unsure if he wanted to kiss her again or not.

“Wull, I find i’s better ta get ta know me befere ya get ta know me prick, but I can’t say I haven’ broken tha’ rule... befere...” He turned to see who the newcomer was, blinking a few times.

He’d seen splices before, but had never been able to interact with one over the years. Espeically since their numbers had seemed to dwindled in recent times. Not that Mann Co. wasn’t home to a large number of oddities regardless, but it was still something of a rush to encounter one. He wet his lips, a flush coming to his cheeks.

“Ya get me in me pyjama trousers instead, hope tha’s no’ too much’ve a disappointment. Name’s Dr. Liam McCadden. Wha’ can I do fer ya?”

Engie sighed contentedly as he sat in an overstuffed chair, bundled up in blankets and just enjoying not having to do anything. It was ceasefire, supposedly an entire week off from fighting, and Dell was the only one at the base. The others had all left for various reasons, either to visit someone, find solitude of their own, or simply for a change of scenery. Dell didn’t mind. He liked a bit of quiet every now and then.

He almost jumped out of his skin when the silence was broken by a loud crash. He knew well enough what a door being bashed in sounded like, but not even Soldier would bash in his own door. Slam it open enthusiastically, maybe, but not bash it in.   

Any normal person would probably call the police, or hide in hopes that the intruder wouldn’t find them, but Mann Co. didn’t hire people like that. Dell just sighed tiredly, rolled his eyes in annoyance, and grabbed his shotgun before heading in the direction of the sound. 

Engie wasn’t sure what he expected to find, but a collapsed cow-woman wearing nothing but a hospital gown was not it. For a moment, he just stood there, trying to wrap his brain around what he was looking at. But, his parents raised him with a “get stuff done” mindset, so after a moment he shook off his shock and cautiously knelt beside the woman. 

“Ma’am?” He reached out and gently shook her shoulder, trying to see if she was even conscious. “Ma’am, are you all right?”

If people thought that Spy was angry about someone trying to remove his mask, it was nothing compared to someone trying to convince him to remove his jacket. More than one person had accused him of being insane with how angry he would become over the simple request, but he had a reason for his actions. 

Underneath his suit jacket was a harness, pinning a pair of enormous crow wings to his back in such a way that no feathers escaped from under the article of clothing. It was extremely uncomfortable, possibly even damaging to his back and wings, but he considered the discomfort worth it in order to keep his secret. 

It was ceasefire, and Spy had decided to take advantage of his temporary freedom to ease his discomfort. Sneaking out of the base so that no one would ask where he was going, he made his way into the nearby forest. He would have preferred to do this somewhere with a door that could be locked, but there simply wasn’t a private room big enough for what he planned to do. 

As soon as he deemed himself far enough away from the base, he removed his jacket and harness, allowing his wings out of captivity. He groaned in relief as he stretched the feathered appendages to their full 20 foot wingspan. The movements hurt, like awakening a sleeping foot, but it still felt good after hours of confining discomfort. 

A sudden noise nearby made him startle, and his wings instinctively flaired for a moment before he caught himself and folded his wings up tightly against his back, hiding them as best he could. 

“Who’s there?” He demanded, hoping fervently that it wasn’t some loudmouth Scout or, worse, the RED Spy. “I warn you, I am not in the mood for games. Come out, or there will be consequences.”

“M-Miss! What in th’ blazes happened to ya?!”

The sound of footsteps grew louder, which descended into a sprint. Skidding to a stop, Doll quickly set her backpack to the side and rolled Abigail to her side so she could see her. She did her best to be as delicate as she could, trying to not infect any open wounds or press against her bruises.

Thankfully, the skinwalker had her own small med-kit with her and a few cold water bottles for situations that would turn her up like this, but never thought of using them on someone she discovered on the brink of death.

When she first discovered the Holstaur, she was under the skin of a large timber wolf. She had tracked her scent from over a mile away and caught a glimpse of silhouette’s in the distance, bashing and kicking at something... or someone. It was still over her body as well, the head hanging over her’s.

Quickly, she began to pull out her small med-kit and opened the lid, pulling out a small bottle of alcohol, bandages, cotton balls, and other small utilities to help her tend to the woman’s outer wounds.

“Jus’... stay with me while ya still can, a’ight?” She said spontaneously. “I... I’ll see if I can try’ta fix these wounds. A-And I got water, too!”

Klaus knocked on her door at an early hour. Five in the morning, to be exact. Normally he’d still be in bed, but well...things weren’t exactly normal. 

Instead of wearing his lab coat and blue tie, he was wearing a zip-up sweatshirt, quite the contrast from his normal wear. The hood was pulled tight around his head.

Klaus gently scrubbed away the dried blood and dirt. Most people thought his job as a doctor was glamorous, but most of his tasks involved basic patient care. Such as bathing a patient who was unable to do so themselves. No one liked to be in bed feeling grungy and dirty so he was more than happy to give his patients a feeling of dignity by being nice and clean. 

“It’s part of my job,” he assured her when she offered her apology. Maybe it was embarrassing for her, but to him, it was just another day at the office. As always, he kept his professional composure and scrubbed the blood with a gentle hand. 

It became more and more evident the poor girl was feeling embarrassed by the reddening of her cheeks. “Are you in any pain?” he asked. It didn’t take someone with a medical degree to know she was probably in pain from her injuries, but he wanted to start a conversation to distract her.
