Now that Larry Daley had committed to being a night guard at the Museum of Natural History -- living animals, lively wax figures and a four-thousand year-old Pharaoh included in the package -- he had also committed to making a list of goals to accomplish while he was here. Things that would make the museum run smoother, while also giving the exhibits the freedom they needed. And also to ensure that he would live to work another night here.
Getting the carnivores to trust him was pretty high on that list. It seemed impossible -- he had done all the research, and they all said the same thing: never try to domesticate wild animals. Which was all well and good in the real world, but Larry couldn’t exactly open the doors and let them roam free. They had to coexist with all the other exhibits, which meant that they had to coexist with Larry first.
That fact didn’t dispel his fear when he walked over to the North American Mammals display. He walked almost comedically slow, a slab of red meat in his hand, looking this way and that with every corner he turned. List or not, he was starting to really regret this decision. A line he read at the library oh-so helpfully appeared in his head -- wolves tend to eat their prey alive -- and his throat clamped up. He made a note to not too too much research on the lions if he managed to survive this encounter.
“Hey, Wolfie?” Inspiring name, but he couldn’t think of anything better in his panicked mind. The fact that he still couldn’t see the predator didn’t help. He needed to make the lights brighter in this foresty display, ‘aestetics’ be damned. “I, uh, I brought you a...treat?”
Larry threw the meat on the floor, and it took every ounce of his energy not to bolt for the doors. Instead, he waited. He wondered what McPhee would think when he found his mangled body on the museum floor, and oh great, he was so glad that he put that image in his mind.
